I just had a thought. Discord was able to brainwash the ponies and make them act against their own natures, right? Well, what if that's what happened to Luna? What if that's how Nightmare Moon was born? He pitted the two sisters against each other, in order to separate them from the Elements of Harmony he feared so much. Hmm...

I also have my doubts about Dash's supposed betrayal. We never actually saw her open the box... Though he did give them back their horns and wings. He wouldn't have done that unless they had already failed, right? Or was he just trying to tempt them into breaking the rules themselves? GAH! SO MUCH TO CONTEMPLATE!!!

I keep forgetting you're a Star Trek fan too... I haven't watched it too much myself. Not really because I don't like it, just because there's so much material to it now that catching up is a daunting task indeed. I'd prolly have to start back at the original series and work my way through 40 years' worth of material. O_o

you dont have to. the shows really dont connect too much between them. there are a few times the a crew will go back in time that you would need to have an understanding but that happens rarely. but hell... going through all of the shows and movies sounds like an awesome idea!
