Well, looking at some of your works, I can tell that you're not completely amateur. Though I do recommend you to look at channels such as FZDSCHOOL and Sycra on YouTube. Some really helpful, fundamental stuff. That's definitely going to speed you up. Oh and, CtrlPaint too. And even if you didn't focus too much on those, with time and experience you can still become great-- even if it took 20 years. But once you have the fundamentals in grasp, the so-said pillars, it'll really make things easier and might even drop that 20 years to 10 or 5. (:

I've gone through ctrlpaint already, right now I am busy with Idrawgirls, FZD and cinix haha.
I know most basic fundamentals, I am just having a hard time to exercise them(school, work, sports)
also, I have been doing some paid work already, so yeah, not an amateur haha

Hey bro!.....Just wanted to hit you up and tell you that I read "Details" and I think your head is REALLY in the right place. It was great.....and somewhat depressing...seeing a young artist with such a humble and realistic attitude towards his art. I say depressing only cuz it's so rare to see and it shouldn't be. Your work is fantastic considering you're new to digital painting. I had been painting traditionally for years and knew Photoshop quite well when I got my first tablet and there was STILL a pretty steep learning curve with it so I can imagine what you're going through being so new to EVERYTHING. Your work has all the potential in the world. Keep it up man. Keep practicing and keep the awesome attitude and you'll be able to do anything you want with your art and take it anywhere you want to go. And check this link out. Some short but extremely helpful videos on alot of the stuff you're dealing with right now. I found them EXTREMELY helpful in a few areas and I'm sure you will too!

Take care man. Keep painting!!!!

Thanks a lot! I've seen a few CtrlPaint's videos in the past but only a few. I guess I could try watching some of the Perspective and Composition ones. Might be helpful. Again, thanks a lot for the motivation boost. : D

I don't know how this is going to sound, but I guess I'll just come right out with it.

I'm doing art as one of my GCSEs and our current project is to create a book, pick a theme and study and reproduce a couple of the works of three artists of our choice in a different medium. When I asked, my teacher told me that I could choose a digital artist as long as the other two were not.

I'm by no means what I'd call a good artist - more fool me for picking art as a subject, I suppose - and I doubt I could do any of your works justice, but your landscapes are beautiful and scenery is the thing I have the most trouble with; I'm hoping that this project will help me improve.

So basically what I'm trying to ask you is, would you mind terribly if I picked you as one of my artists for my GCSE project? It's perfectly fine if you don't want me to, and I won't be offended

Thank you!

Maybe that's just because I'm reading the books lately or watching the movies again or just because I'm a die-hard Tolkien fan (new to the group, though), but I keep thinking "Man, he could paint all of Middle-Earth" when I look at your gallery. I would LOVE to see some of your own renditions of the locations described in the books. You're like a young Alan Lee or John Howe!

ehecod In reply to Frabac [2013-05-06 09:19:21 +0000 UTC]

Ha, thanks. : D

Well, I'd actually have to read the books first. Yeah, I know-- I should've read them ages ago. .__.'' I'm not too much of a book guy. I started reading A Game Of Thrones a while ago though. Reading books is a little harder for me because I prefer to read them in English, since I just think English sounds so much better than my native language. Finland translates names of people and locations which is really irritating.

The point is, I'm fairly good at English but books have these-.. "advanced words". Like synonyms for things. So I'll have to check on dictionary every now and then and that makes it kind of slow. And I'm a slow reader anyways. :L But it's not like every other word is unknown, but every few pages there's a weird word or something. At least for AGOT, I don't know 'bout Tolkien's books in English. I've read the Finnish translation of Hobbit which was great though.

*Blows off the dust on this convo*

Oh, don't worry about reading the books, I'm 20 and I just finished reading "The Fellowship" for the first time. As for the translations, I get what you mean (I'm French and names and locations are also translated), but I still enjoy seeing what the translators came up with to match the author's original ideas.

I don't think Tolkien uses an "advanced vocabulary" (if you don't count Elvish, that is ). Sure he can give lenghty descriptions and sometimes, like you said, use synonyms you wouldn't normally hear in an everyday conversation, but I still think it's accessible. But then again, I really don't know, I have yet to read Tolkien in English, I've only been able to find the French translation where I live.

One thing's for sure, though, "His Dark Materials" is THE series that can't be read without a thesaurus (for me, at least).

I should give the Game of Thrones books a try, I'm a fan of the show after all. But I feel I should read that Harry Potter thing first... I've been putting it on hold for so long now. XD

ehecod In reply to Frabac [2013-07-02 19:47:11 +0000 UTC]

I still haven't made it through A Game Of Thrones, which is the first book in the A Song Of Ice And Fire book series. Yep, that's actually the name of the series as where the TV show is just named after the first book. ._. Same with Harry Potter. I have all the books but I'm still stuck in the first one. I know I really like both series but for some reason I'm just not much of a reader. I wonder if that's ever going to change.

English in books, especially in dialogue, just reads in a much more fitting way in comparison to Finnish. Though I discussed this a while ago with someone else and it turns out that starting with GRRM just put me under the delusion that all English books are written in such advanced and eloquent way, when they're really not. So maybe I should just fetch myself the first book of LOTR and try reading it. Tolkien has created quite the world so it might be interesting to delve into with more detail.

How did you get so good at painting landscapes?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ehecod In reply to swigganicks [2013-05-05 09:09:00 +0000 UTC]

Hmm, let's see.

1) FZDSCHOOL on YouTube.

2) Time, which I've got a lot of since I took a gap year from school.

3) Passion. I'm very passionate about the idea of creating-.. things. Hence, I'm painting/drawing everyday and that counts as experience.

Other than that, try to observe your surroundings wherever you are. How light hits things and so forth. Look at reference, fill up your visual library. I'm also browsing art on deviantART on other sites constantly, and that inspires me to do my own paintings.

I hope that sums it up somehow. I guess I've just been doing the right things so far.
