Hey I really like your work and I want to make similar scenes with hiper real cartoonish stile so I started working on that. You say "The shaders on the characters are custom shaders designed to blur reflection more towards the angle facing you (so that there is less blurring towards the edges). They also reflect less on the angle facing you, like a Fresnel effect." - Is this "A Maya Blin shader with a gradient and samplerInfo on the reflectivity were used for the reflection layer, while a Maya Ramp shader was used on the layer with the characters lighting" or you actually code(program) custom shaders for mentalray? And do I have to learn coding to reach the quality renders you have? How you set up ramps&gradients for materials? I want to combine this mentalray renderings with vectors in illustrator exported from vector render. So half of object to be vectors, half to be menalrender. But this later.. first to make right mentalray..
