I was wondering did you go to an art school or did you learn by yourself?

I went to art school for two years but circumstances led me out the door. Also, I hated doing 3D. Stupid decision, but I'm also glad? I never advanced past the basic courses, except for a few intermediate classes later on. So I mostly learned on my own with the new skills I did acquire. Sometimes a solid foundation is all you need to move on if you keep them in mind and practice well constantly. ^^

By solide foundation, do you mean mastering perspective, color & shading, gesture, etc.? I think I understand what you mean by having a solid foundation that can help you with the rest.

Well, by solid foundation, I mean really learning the basics and not underestimating or undervaluing them when you start learning perspective, color and shading. Mastering eventually comes from practicing the basics till it's instinct.
From that point, it's easier to advance to more difficult tasks because you're not struggling with the first steps. Incremental and continual practice, plus refreshing what you learn, all leads up to mastering. Something I'm still working on.
Since I only learned the basics in school, it was up to me to use it for what it was worth and improve from there.
Or I could have stopped and stagnated with no progression in sight. Something a lot of artists do unfortunately.
