You're welcome, and thanks! Your works reminded me of the series, Merlin, and the fact that I should get back to watching it. I watched the first few episodes and I really liked it but then I just stopped for some reason. :l Also, everyone's always talking about how great Sherlock is, so.. maybe I should give that a shot as well.

Keep it up, and thanks for the +watch! (:

Love your painting, I don't have a tablet so that sucks for me Q_Q.
You are is pretty good at the moment, but there is lots of room for improvement. On one of your deviations you say that, it is a speed paint being 30-35 minutes, on your others which I suppose aren't speed paints they range from about 55mins to 2 hours. I think that instead of just painting quick scenes in an hour or so you could really try to put all your skills to the test and make the best thing you possibly could. Or maybe take 12 hours instead, over a period of days. It doesn't have to be all your work, but you could do it as a side project. My opinion is that you need to define your paintings more as in detail wise, but I consider that due to short amount of time spent, I think you need to give more definition (e.g [link] ) yes it is very "concept style", but the details are quite vague. Overall, I personally think you have great talent (Compared to me at painting LOL, Don't think I can even paint) and similarly great potential. Keep working at it!

Thanks! And thanks for all the detailed comments that you left on my deviations, it's much appreciated. ^^ And I guess the amount of time that I spend on my paintings is something that I just feel more comfortable with. Also, spending too much time on detailing something will make the painting look a bit too.. tight, and to me that loses the painting's "feel". I like to paint with a vague style where I just indicate some things. Not to mention that working on something for too long will stop you from noticing mistakes and you get stuck in this so-called "Monkey House" (ctrlpaint term, derp).

I'm also terrible with details to begin with. I don't have the fundamental understanding of lighting nor the visual library of textures and all sorts of things to even do what you requested. I've been only painting for nearly half a year now, so.. yeah, I couldn't do that right now, even if I put my everything into it. Not yet. Maybe in the future!

You're very welcome . True spendings an hour is desirable, it's agood amount of time to work. As for detailing, you only need to detail and/or define parts closer to the view, since contrast decreases as you go further away. You're vague style is very concept artish, which is nice but some parts look a little under detailed. As for not noticing mistakes, that is definitely a big factor. Normally what I do is work for an hour lets say, then take a break or do something, sometimes I might come back within 30 minutes, sometimes a day or even a week, to continue it, that way you get a new perspective. What others also say is useful is flipping the image horizontally to see how it looks, apparently it helps LOTS with composition.
With details, it is something you will have to practice, to understand lighting observe others works and see how they add lighting to different materials. Textures are something you have to get somehow, you can't just pull that one out of thin air I'm afraid.

Despite this, You should still put everything into it. You see, if you put EVERYTHING into it, you will see where you stand, from there you can see what you need to improve. It doesn't have to be a good result, it might not even be a full piece. Sometimes I just get a large canvas and draw random things all over or practice my photoshop skills on 10 things at once, they aren't even related, but it helps you get an idea of what parts you have got down well or what parts need improving. For instance, I draw a spaceship, then next I draw a fence randomly on the paper, then maybe a mountain range or maybe a river and then a planet all jumbled up. I also sometimes focus on a single skill. Lets say lighting is hard for you, shiny metal things, water and glass. I would take three images, maybe one with lots of puddles, the other maybe a fully metallic robot, and lets say a glass sculpture. Then try copy the lighting to see how it works and learn like that.
I hope it helps .

Yeah, I do the flip canvas thing a lot. It's super helpful. I remember when I was just starting out and when I flipped the canvas everything was a little bit wonky and leaned to either left or right-- but now that's already a lot better and barely happens at all. : D I should paint some stuff from reference, though. Like, small things.

Definitely, when people matte paint for movies, they have a library of images from mountains to waterfalls and everything else so that they have reference to reality.

Yeah, it is pretty damn amazing. : D But don't get too excited, it's nothing BIG. It's just a browser-based game with more people working on it than just me (I do the landscape-scenery stuff, as where the rest does creatures, items, web design etc). BUT, it's still a job and I think that's really.. amazing. 0:

Sweet gallery! It is so cool to see your work get better and better page by page. How did you get so good at digital art in such a short period of time? I'm already watching the FZD videos. Do you paint every day? If you have time, I'd really appreciate any tips you could offer.

ehecod In reply to Em-Blem-95 [2013-03-31 21:29:20 +0000 UTC]

Thanks!

I do have the time, but I'm not sure if I'll be able to help you at all. The biggest help to me has been Feng Zhu's videos-- he explained all the basics very well and after that I'd say it's only time and experience that have honed my skills to what they are now.

But! I suppose there are a few other factors, such as observing photos (you know, looking at how the light hits, colors etc.). Aside from that, I do paint everyday. Well, not literally everyday since there might be times when I'm feeling uninspired and just can't get anything done (haven't had those in a while but I'm sure there'll be another one sooner or later). But besides that, I do paint/draw everyday.

I've also realized that some things literally do come with experience. I haven't looked at many tutorial videos besides Feng Zhu's but after a long period of painting I just realize that "wow, I know how to do this and this" without having looked at how to do them. It's weird.

Anyways, if you had a landscape piece on your page I could drop in for some crits and help you get started?

Also, some of the most important things to keep an eye on is depth and values. If you're watching Feng Zhu's videos I'm sure he'll bring that up sooner or later (or already has).

Cheers. I hope this helped at least a little bit. I'm bad at giving people detailed/helpful tips when I'm not even sure what I'm doing right to improve. xP

Thank you for replying! I do have a landscape piece on my page, but it's so bad, I don't know if it's worth looking at. I've been doing all my landscapes in black and white because when I try to add color, it looks really awful. I did it before watching any of Feng Zhu's videos, so the composition is awful too.

I'll definitely keep watching the videos. And it sounds like I need to be painting a lot more often than I am currently. I will try to notice details in photos too, and I'll try to focus on my depth and values more. I need to put in the hours and get the experience.

You're definitely NOT bad at giving helpful tips. Thank you so much for your help. You're a very inspiring artist.
