Crap! I forgot all about this! Sorry about that. But yeah, I do agree with what your saying. Its great to see them trying something new, which I encourage very much. And yes, beck then, Sonic games had no real storyline, except for going after Eggman, and saving the world. But, there were other sonic related stories out there that were very popular at the time, and even in the present time.
For example, the archie comics takes in a much more serious, and darker tone to the Sonic story. Yes, at first this world is colorful, and fun. But as the story progresses, you realize how dark the story is, as the world is following into Robotniks hands. But, this is a comic book series, which has more time to develop on its characters and the story itself, while the movie only had about an hour and thirty minutes or so.
So, I can see why the movie had no choice but to shout out explanation with its new world, but there are films that seem to fail at doing this sort of thing.
See, there's this movie Called X that I found at goodwill's a while back, and its an anime movie. Now, I can't even tell you what the plot is even about, because that's what the entire film is basically doing. It just shouts at exposition, more exposition, and even more exposition to the point that your brain just shuts down, and doesn't even wanna follow what's happening in the movie anymore.
Now, on the plus side, Sonic the movie is short, so its exposition isn't to bad. Just after not watching the movie so long, you just realize the mistakes that are in the film, but hey no films perfect, right?

It's mainly just the characters, it doesn't focus on them like other movies. Just character interaction and stuff like that.
