Artist’s Statement:
I’ve always had an overwhelming desire to make my voice heard and to have my ideas communicated. This desire influences many of my choices I make every day, and it is the main reason I began and continue making my art.
The backbone of almost all my work is human nature and what parts of it delight and disgust me. The emotion involved in any given piece can be anything from guilt and heartbreak to greed and curiosity. While I’m in the process of creating a piece, I allow myself to be consumed in whatever emotion I want to be illustrated. For example, if I am creating a piece illustrating pain I will try to remember things that have hurt me while at the same time trying to focus on what image I’m composing.
People inspire me. People inspire me very much. I like to observe someone’s actions and piece together my own assumptions about what goes on in their head. When observing someone I know, I tend to make mental corrections to whatever I’ve come to believe about them, editing and changing it until I feel like I have a mental documentation of their inner workings; though I do this, I do not always believe my assumptions are true. Practices such as this help me teach myself things about humanity that I am too narcissistic to notice in myself, and I will reflect them in my work, trying ro make a piece more understandable to more people so that when someone looks at my art, they can see their own flaws and desires and guilt and sins reflected back to them. I also like to make people see things differently; I want to have people question things they were taught since a young age.
I use many different mediums and the reason for that is simple: I use the material that feels right. I want to be sure I use the right substance to embody the idea I am trying to communicate. For this reason I keep my mind open to trying new things and using them in ways that I haven’t been taught. If I don’t use the right medium for a piece, it never feels quite done, even after it’s matted and tittled and hanging in a show.
