HEY! Thanks for the watch of course! Cookie and Cupcake are adorable ^^ What sculpt is Cookie? He is just too cute >3< If you don't mind me asking, when did you enter the hobby? C:

ChronicallySpaced In reply to QueenObvious [2011-12-01 00:50:28 +0000 UTC]
You're very welcome! ^^
Well. The boy is Cupcake, and he belongs to my roommate. ^^ He's an Angel of Dream Chi. Cookie is mine, and she is an Asleep Eidolon Coral. <3 I really love Cupcake... he's the first BJD I ever had any experience with, and I fell in love with him the instant his owner let me hold him. ^_^ He looked really different then, with a crudely done face up... but once Haiiro cleaned him up so she could do her own face up on him... he stole my heart. XD I guess it's weird I bonded with someone else's doll, but I just love him!
I've only been in the hobby for... hoo. Two months? Really, not even that much. I got my girl, my very first doll, on October 20th. ^^ I ordered my first doll-related thing at the end of September, which is my MigiDoll Ryu head. I'm also waiting on a Crobidoll Yeon-ho, which is the first full doll I ever ordered, but the poor thing will be the last of it all to arrive. XD Shouldn't be long now, though... maybe a week, two at the most, I hope.
So... yep. I'm a huge n00b. I've been interested in BJDs for around 5 or 6 years, but I started "officially" doing research and saving this past May or June. ^^ There's a lot I don't know, but... I'm really excited to learn, and get to do more photoshoots and face-ups and make more clothes. <3

Oops! I got a little gender confused DX..this hobby will do that to you! XDD I think Cupcake is really a sweetheart<3 That's great you got the bonding experiance with another doll before buying your own...The only others I have seen in real life besides my own were Soom dolls at ComicCon ^^
Oh not to worry, I joined in around October 1st of last year C: I entered this hobby completely on my own and clueless. I found out about the dolls through dA and the first one I ever saw in person was my first doll ~ Ryu. By the way you have made some excellent choice I own Ryu and Yeon-Ho!
It's easey to learn, many people will tell you it takes a lot of research and hard work but you get into the swing of things quickly. I know I started looking into them seriously only a few months after discovering them!BJDs also got me into photography and now I love face-ups as well! The only thing I have not really tried is making clothes...sewing machines are a bit scary >3<

That's okay! It's easy to get confused. XD I think I'm getting better at telling, but I still get confused at times.
Aww! That's funny. I didn't know you had a Yeon-ho. ^^ I need to check out more of your gallery. I've just been busy with work this week.
Also... Ryu is the first sculpt I ever fell in love with. I never expected to buy him... so having him is like... still a bit surreal. I can't imagine what it will be like once I've gotten him "completed." I don't think I'll ever be able to stop staring at him. XD Kind of like I won't be able to stop staring at my Yeon-ho when he finally gets here. He and Ryu were both my ultimate dream sculpts.
Sewing machines ARE scary. I've made a couple of small things, though. I hand-sewed Cookie a pair of jeans, and I'm making her a shirt right now. I much prefer hand sewing to using a machine. XD It works pretty well for doll clothes, too. For people clothes, though, it's not as feasible. XD I did my first face up ever on my Ryu head, and if the weather would work with me, I'd love to try to re-do it. Face ups are definitely my favorite part of the hobby so far!
But yeah. I'm with you on the photography thing, too. I was into it a little before getting my doll, but now I'm getting more serious about it. Someday (far away), I'm hoping I can get a fancy camera... ^^

I know, anything girly I now expect to be a boy! XD
Yes ^^ He is not in my gallery yet as he does not have a face-up...I'm waiting to get some MSC before I do it (: Hopefully, I'll have it done by January!
Awww, I'm glad your getting your dream sculpts first, a lot of people "settle" for more affordable dolls at first so it's nice to hear your getting your most treasure sculpts first. Ryu is deffinately still my all time favorite, you will not be dissapointed. He pretty much has the perfect face (: I cannot say much about Yeon-Ho since I have not done his face-up yet...he does not get much attention because of that but I do have a character in mind for him!
Hahah, do you know what kind of machine you have? I tried using my Aunt's once but hers is an old model and it was very confusing. She promised to show me how one day though, I'd like to make some shirts XD My boys need shirts! Face-ups have become quite addicting for me, I plan to open commissions soon! Just keep trying, it is really easey to get the hang of. I know I have done my Ryu about four times! Right now he is blank though (waiting for MSC)
Yes me too, my dolls REALLY got me into it. I am also taking a photograph class though, so I take pictures of other things too. I recomend getting an entry level DSLR by Nikon or Canon (or Sony). I picked an older model and got it for only $400! One tip is that any entry level SLR you get will take amazing pictures of about the same quality, the higher price just means more features and buttons XD However if you plan to go all out, the best right now is probably the Canon Rebel T3i. The real difference between cameras comes when you start buying professional DSLRs in the thousand dollar range and higher XD

Oooh, okay. Makes sense. I've been wanting to re-do my Ryu's face, but the weather has been really bad lately. It got cold all of a sudden, which is kind of freakish for where I live. XD I'm off work for the whole next week, but I'm not sure I'll be able to do any face up work because it's supposed to be cold and rainy. Go figure.
Yeah... I figured if I was going to get into this hobby, there's really no point unless I'm getting the sculpts I really like. Even the cheap end of things still costs a good chunk of money, and it's silly to spend that money on something I wouldn't like as much, when I can just set it aside and keep saving for that "dream" doll. ^^ That's how I see it, anyway.
Hmmm. I'm not sure what kind of sewing machine it is. I haven't actually used one in several years, but my roommate has one. I have no idea what it is... just that it's old. XD And it seems to like to eat fabric. One of these days maybe I'll get brave and have her show me how to use it, but for now, I'm happy taking a little longer to do it by hand.
I went and bought some fabric and elastic tonight to make some more clothes for my girl, so I'm excited. And I got enough denim I should easily be able to make some jeans for my boy when he finally gets here. ^_^
I love, love, love face ups. ^^ It's so much fun. I have two practice heads ordered so I can try out a lot of different things and experiment. <3 One day I'll get brave enough to wipe off my girl's factory default and give her one more fitting to her character, but for now, I'm happy with what she has. I noticed you opened your commissions! That's great. ^_^ I'd like to be able to do face up commissions myself one day, but I don't know that I'll ever be good enough for that. ^_^;
It's cool that you're taking a photography class. I think it would be good to start with an entry level DSLR for me. XD I'm not looking for super professional... at least not right now. I'd just be happy with something that takes better quality than my point and shoot. It takes good enough photos, though, that I don't mind waiting until I get better at composition, posing, and knowing HOW to take photos of my dolls to actually spring for a fancy camera. ^_^

When it's cold I spray my dolls in the basement and beforehand I soak the bottle of sealant in warm water. You should gove that a try see if it will help in the cold!
That's exactly what I think. I really did not want to buy an SD when I started because they were so expensive, bu t I thought I was only going to get one doll XD and I figured I should get the one I really want if it is the only one. Of course, here I am a year later with three dolls and five heads and my Ryu does not even have a face up right now XDDD
Oh you do it by hand? Maybe I'll give that a try! I always mess up the machine and I have t re-thread it XD...which I don't even know how to do exactly hahaha
Oh cool! You have to post pictures once you have finished them C:
Faceups are probably my favorite par tof the hobby. Honestly, you should have seen my first one though,m it was horrible. If you do tehm a lot you really do iprove..which is why I have so many heads and so few bodies >3< I might actually look into getting a practice head now, though. I think I might sell some heads to downsize my collection so then I won't have as many to paint. Anywaysm just practice practice practice! I never thought I would master eyelashes but know I think they come out pretty well (at least to my liking). Oh and the other day I finally took off my Chrom's default to do his face-up >3< It was really pretty too so I felt bad but it just was not the right style for his character...also, he had his default limited face-up from when he was first purchased as a monthly doll so taking it off I beleive his value went down...but I don't plan on selling him ever so I'm happy I did it and ecited to paint him. I'll tell you what though, you reeeaaally have to scrub to get MSC off XDD
yeah that's a good way to start C: I got the Nikon D3000 for $400~! It was a really great buy, it was cheap becuase it has just been replaced with the Nikon D3100. It is a really nice camera for starting out if you do not need video. However, when I eventually replace it I would like to get something that takes video and has an LSD that flips out. ANother cheap but good starter SLR is the Canon XSi, but if you can't find it there is also the Canon XS~

That's a good idea about the MSC! It's raining right now, but it's supposed to be dry this week, just really cold. I live in an apartment, so I don't have a basement, but maybe if I can soak the bottle in warm water, spray outside, then quickly bring in the head, it will be okay... it's times like this I really wish I had a garage!
Yeahhh, getting MSC off is a pain! I body blushed my girl, and I recently took the MSC off her hands and feet to re-do her fingers and toenails, and it took me like 2 hours. XD That's brave of you to wipe off his face up... but it should be fun to give him a face up to fit him better. ^^
Hand sewing does take a bit longer... and I'm not that great at it yet, but I do prefer it to working on a machine. The jeans I made are kind of stupid-looking, but at least they fit on her body. XD And I know what to do next time to make them better! Same with her shirt... it's not quite done, but when I tried it on her last night before going to bed, it fit a bit funny around her armpit. XD We'll see how it works when I finish getting it together today.
Thanks for the advice on cameras. ^^ I'll have to keep those in mind for when I finally commit to purchasing one.

That should work just fine (: I have heard of people who say their sealant isn't even affected by cold weather! And you can always take it off anf re-do it if you need to.
Pff tell me about it >3< how was body blushing? I'm thinking about blushing my Dia...he needs to be sanded too. Yeah, I just got some new paint thinner yesterday so hopefully I'll work on my Chrom soon OUO
Well you get better with practice (: and there are a lot of tutorials on DoA so I'm sure you'll get the hang of it soon. Good luck with sewing! When you figure out what works best you'll have to let me know
No problem C:

Well then! I'll have to try it out. I really want to take another stab at giving Casey (my Ryu) the perfect face. ^^ I really want to actually attempt to paint lip lines on him... and get the whole "dark circles under the eyes" effect that he needs to look more like himself. XD I'll have to figure it out.
Body blushing wasn't bad at all. ^_^ I enjoyed it quite a bit, although it was time consuming to spray all the different body parts. I was able to do it all in one layer, except the hands and feet... which I have already re-done once, and would like to re-do again now that I've learned some things. XD
Sanding... I have done a little bit of. I just sanded a random chip from Cookie's foot. Haiiro has done more sanding on her dolls. She gave her Iple boy a full body seam sanding... and as far as I know, she completely sanded Cupcake, too. He was pretty damaged from his first owner, lots of scratches. >_<; He's all better now, though! Just needs a new face up.
And thanks. ^_^ I will. I finished Cookie's shirt today... I made a few mistakes with seam allowances, but it turned out cute in spite of the mistakes, and functional. I'll have to post a photo when I get a good one.

I just bought some MSC I'm really excited, I'm hoping it willl work better than Testor's on my Crobi's face...the resin around his eyes is really smooth and the Testor's is too thin to stick (at least this is what Cats10 and I assumed was happening)!
Lip lines seem scary but they're actually not! ^^ The first time I tried them i expected them to be as hard as eyelsahes but they're a lot easier. I use white paint for them, what were you going to use? white? C: Yeha if you run into any problems let me know and I'll try to help! I'm no pro but I have done quite a few face-ups. I'm addicted to that smokey eye look so many boy dolls have...I think almost every one of my dolls has it XD Good luck on your Ryu! He's such a beautiful sculpt >3<
Ok that gives me some confidence (: For some reason I feel like it will be a lot harder than doing a face-up!
Oh really? Do you know what grit sandpaper she used? I was planning on using 400
Oohh nice Yeah I would love to see Cookie's shirt, it's great that your improving with sewing! It doesn;t need to be perfect either, as long as it looks good OUO

ChronicallySpaced In reply to QueenObvious [2011-12-07 11:24:17 +0000 UTC]
I remember you mentioning that in your YouTube video... I hope the MSC works for you. Using white for the lip lines? I never thought of that... I'll have to try it! I was trying to use a dark reddish color, and it did not work out well, hehe. The shade was all wrong for the color I had blushed his lips, and no matter my many attempts at mixing the right color, it just didn't go well. I am really bad at mixing paints. XD So! Maybe white will be the answer? I'll have to try it. ^^
I'm sure you can do the body blushing! I think the worst thing that can happen is OVER-doing it... but then, I prefer subtle body blushing. ^^ It's all to your taste.
For the seam sanding... Haiiro wet sanded her boy, starting with a rougher grit and working her way up to a really fine grit. She went 280, 320, 400, and ended with 600. ^^ I don't think those were exactly the suggested numbers, but they worked out really well. The most important thing is to sand in small circles and make sure to sand the area around the seam, too. Not far out, just enough that it isn't really obvious a part was sanded.
There's a really good tutorial on DoA you can consult for a detailed explanation... but that's the basics of what she did. ^^ It looks great, IMO. I can't even tell there were seams to begin with.
I don't have a good photo of the shirt I made... but here's one I took with my cell phone in our kitchen. XD
[link]
She's just wearing the shirt... it doesn't really work with the jeans I made her, though it might once I make her a new pair with the nice fabric I bought. I really want to make some leggings to go under it, though... I think that would be cute. ^_^ I got the elastic for the project... I just have to decide if I want to destroy more of my old clothing or find some fabric for them. XD

Yeah I'll make sure to mention in a video if it does or not (: I also origionally bought a reddish color for lip lines, but I never tried it..I feel like many of the dolls I see have white so give it ago! ^^ My Dia has white lip lines OUO
Exactly, I'm afraid the color will end up being too dark..but I'll just give it a go, I can always redo it ^^
I was planning to wet sand too, maybe I'll do a 300 and a 400..my dad said to sainf in the direction of the seam (up and down), you say circles are better?
I looked up some tutorials too (: thanks for the info though!
Oh gosh, she is really just SO adorable XD and that shirt came out REALLY good O.oYeah I think leggings would be cute, what about a leopard pattern? I love your girl so much<3

Ohh I can see it now in the photo of your Dia. I'll definitely have to try it. ^^
I think since resin doesn't really have a "grain," it's better to do it in circles so it looks smooth, and so it doesn't look obvious that just one spot was sanded. I'm not sure what the logic is behind that, but that's my best guess. It seemed to work. ^^ I haven't sanded large areas myself, so I'm not the best authority. If my Crobi boy ends up having really obvious seams, though, I may be getting a crash course of my own soon! XD
Thank you. ^^ Oh man... a leopard pattern would be so cute! XD I'll have to check out the local fabric and craft stores and see if I can find something. I have some arm warmers I never wear that are black with cherries on them... I'm not sure how well it would translate into doll size, but it could be cute. ^^
I never thought I'd have a girl doll... but I love her so much. I'm so glad I got her, even if it delayed some other doll-related purchases and has made me a little broke over the past couple of months. XD So worth it!

ChronicallySpaced In reply to QueenObvious [2011-12-11 11:29:31 +0000 UTC]
Looking at the fabric, I think the print is way too big to translate well to doll-sized clothing... so I'll have to keep an eye out for something cute the next time I go to the fabric store. ^^ I really... really want to get some pretty brocade to make a kimono for my Crobi boy (picking him up at the post office tomorrow! YAY!)... and I am planning to make him some jeans, so he'll need a casual shirt to go with those. ^_^ I am pretty broke right now... but maybe after my next paycheck, I can afford to buy some more fabric. For now, I need to tackle the task of making a shirt for my roomie's Yo-SD... and making new jeans for Cookie.
So many projects... so little time. XD
That's so true. XD Yep... as long as we love our dolls and enjoy being in the hobby, that's the important thing. ^_^
