I remember seeing your work on Amino a few years ago, then your profile suddenly disappeared. My friends and I had always wondered where you went off to, and how you were so skilled at environment artwork.
Fast forward to today as I'm researching entertainment design schools, and I come across your comment on a post from Alex Jessup describing his time at FZD (one of the schools I'm considering). Your comment said that you had been accepted, so I clicked into your profile here to see what the work of an FZD graduate looks like.Β
I immediately recognized several pieces in your gallery from Amino and realized I accidentally rediscovered your artwork. The internet is so tiny sometimes.

Haha! Yeah! Internet can be quite small, especially in industries like entertainment design. Yeah I attended FZD back in 2015-2016, I didn't go into the school without any artistic ability but I certainly couldn't work professionally.
Yeah, I deleted my profile on AA a while back because I was putting time into apps that weren't really progressing me in life..
Anyways if you had any questions I'd be happy to answer if you're looking into Entertainment Design schools, I attended FZD and also have been to art center (though I recently dropped out to do work full time and start going more into the business world)
So I know a little about schools and practice to get in if you need any advice on it all. I'd be happy to point you to free resources if you're looking to get into the professional working world.

I would definitely appreciate being pointed towards free resources.
My eventual goal is to land a professional art job at an industry studio, but my current goal is learning. This year (and all the previous years) I've just been drawing random stuff for lolz, and I casually thought about becoming a "concept artist". Recently though, I've been doing my research and dispelling a lot of the myths I used to believe about professional art, (concept art vs. illustration, the reality of working for a studio, the ratio of rendered work vs. design sketches), and I realized I have a lot to learn.
I've decided that 2018 is the year I start learning the basics, and I'm giving myself as much time as it takes me to learn this stuff. I'm starting with perspective (drawing through, orthogonal vs. transversal lines, camera placement, etc). I picked up Scott Robertson's "How to Draw" book, and I'm going through that currently, as well as the early lessons on DrawABox.com. After perspective I'll eventually move on to values, color, lighting, composition, story, all the things that real professionals don't have to think about too much anymore. My one advantage is that I don't have to get a job right now or anytime soon, so I have years to learn, practice, and get my stuff together.Β
Entertainment/Industrial Design school would obviously be a one-stop-shop to learn everything I need, but I ideally want to try to learn as much as this stuff as I can for free. FZD's YouTube channel is currently the biggest treasure trove I've found yet.
TL;DR I would most definitely appreciate being pointed towards free resources. edit: spelling

fusroda.com/ Β Β (good videos and advice, I watched these every sunday when I was learning)
www.learnsquared.com/ Β (affordable classes from industry leading professionals, all online)
there's a youtube channel by Maciej Kuciara called Art Cafe that is pretty good, I haven't watched a ton of them but my friends who are working really seemed to like them.
Also another big piece of advice: If you want to become a professional and get proper mentorship and guidance, you need to surround yourself with professionals, online or real life, it doesn't matter. Just start networking and have them hold you accountable to practice and fundamentals.
When I was starting I'd send random facebook messages and emails all the time to try and find people who could critique work and mentor or recommend things. Make it a habit. Make a rule like, you need to message or email a few people every single day. Your success in the future is dependent on your ability to sell. I'd recommend the book 'how to win friends and influence people' to get started, it's a very famous book
And if you want me to throw in a wild card book that I recommend, read Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki. I don't know if it will help you, but it's worth the read.
Β Also I'd recommend learning Sketchup (3D software) 3D is where the industry is headed (it's too powerful to ignore, most places will expect you to know the basics)
Β you'll need to be able to use basic 3D at minimum. Probably better to get into it early. As far as advice goes, it depends on who you ask. Even at FZD they'reΒ learning 3D as early as term 1 now days.
But the biggest thing that will set you apart and land you a job always is going to be your design and ability to solve problems. Become as exposed to the world and different things as you can. There's some great artists out there who never land a job in concept work because they can't think. It's all about problem solving and giving multiple solutions.
I don't come on deviantart a lot, nor am I super active in the concept art world, I'm a bit more focused on some other stuff in life now, starting a business online and reading a bunch etc. But I'd be happy to help when I can

I must ask you questions
1. Are you self taught?
2. How long have you been doing art?
3. What program do you use to draw? It looks like SAI but I just wanna check.

Coolb3rt In reply to LilSiZi [2014-10-25 04:02:54 +0000 UTC]
1:Β Yes I am entirely self taught up to this point
(I had done traditional art with just pencil and paper till September of 2013 when I got a computer for my 18 Birthday)
Β 2: Β Β I've kinda doodled all my life in school, but around ehhhh Early March 2013 I got more serious, in fact I got a Deviant art because I was so proud of this drawing.
coolb3rt.deviantart.com/art/Hoβ¦
Β Β Β I started practicing a few hours pretty much every day. This is when I started to improve more. I was pretty dedicated to getting as good as possible, no idea why I just suddenly decided to do art. I think it's because a compliment from a friend and the awesome online community.
Β Β I mostly only did anime style up to July 2013 at that point I started exploring more than just anime because I was curious about realism and such. I did a few perspective drawings, really focusing on storytelling rather than just trying to draw a hot anime girl. Starting to really get the hang of line weight and shading I first attempted realism in early September 2013 and spent about 15 hours on a drawing because I was determined to draw something super realistic before I was 18. I went all out on this, which was my first encounter with something really realistic.
coolb3rt.deviantart.com/art/Maβ¦
It's drawn entirely from a photo but I learned a lot from it, I learned that realism (at least with pencil art) is pretty much all in the contrast and accurate values. I did another one the next day which was this one
th08.deviantart.net/fs71/PRE/iβ¦
I turned 18, I got a pretty nice computer for my birthday. And with that I got
3: Photoshop, I do all my digital art on photoshop and always will. It's the industry standard for what I am into which is:
Β Concept art! I was talking to someone online and I linked them some picture and said "I'd love to do drawing like this" He told me it was called concept art, gave me a single link, and said "get a fkn graphic tablet and a nice ass computer and you are all set"
www.youtube.com/user/FZDSCHOOL
I watched every video of that and was blown away that I haven't heard of it before. I became HELL BENT on getting as good as possible, and started practicing AT LEAST 5 hours a day. (some days I just bleh though lol and slept all day, maybe once every 10 days)
I started doing landscapes and hard surface rather than characters. I bought a book on some really advanced perspective and spent 4 months going through the first 50 pages. I watched those FZD videos 3 times, some of the episodes 5+ times.
So I've been pretty much practicing around an average of 3 hours a day now. IΒ practice pretty much only fundamentals. Perspectice, lighting, composition, Color theory, (I don't do any anatomy yet)
I got all the recommended books by all the industry professionals of my favorite kind of digital art.
Β
I know this is long, but I'll give you a spam of links now to all my favorite artists and books I got that were invaluable to me (and them so they claim)
Videos/ Channels to get you informed and understanding all the awesome world of concept art and illustration:
FZD Design Cinema Youtube Channel
www.youtube.com/user/FZDSCHOOL
Β Β Feng Zhu one of the leading industry professionals makes these videos to mostly talk about how the concept art industry works, he does painting and stresses fundamentals. He runs a school in Singapore (which I just so happened to be accepted to and am going to move to Singapore in June 2015 to attend )
LevelUp
www.youtube.com/user/levelupseβ¦
They have a website also
Β Β Β Three Polish artists talk about art and invite professional artists to go live every Sunday to draw.
Their first ten or so episodes are a little spotty because their Google Hangout kept quitting, but if you skip past the parts where it cuts out then you learn a LOAD of stuff, and on how their art careers took off and all about learning art.
They have a website also
Β -->Β www.fusroda.com where you can find all of their overpaints, links to tons of books and stuff, references, other places to learn online, awesome textures for art, a MASSIVE link list for visual library and inspiration etc. That's in their resources folder.

Sorry for the HUGE post, but if you're serious about getting into any kind of artistic thing, I want you to have all the stuff I've picked up over the past year. Big AAA corporations like Pixar don't pick up just anyone, you gotta be really good, but it's entirely possible and people do it all the time if you're willing to put in the effort. It's a super fun journey.
Let me know how it goes, and if you want to add me on facebook or anything I'm always happy to do that!
