Hey Jeff, I love your Amnesia custom story so much! It is amazing! Now i'm interested in Alchemy. I also said that i'd like to make my own custom stories. The problem is school how prevents me from putting time into it. I also really like your art. I've played around 30 custom stories so far and yours is my favorite. I highly prefer the ones that have new monsters.Β

Awww, thank you Kyle!

I'm glad you enjoyed my custom story. I can't take all the credit for it, Damascus did a lot of the work, more than me. If you truly love something, pursue it! Custom Story are non-profit generating games, but they are a lot of fun to make and are great training for actually making games! Make sure to make your own stories! Creativity is great and I'd love to see you make something unique and indie instead of something trying to be Triple-A.

Does he have a DA account or offer advice for making custom stories? Does he also make Left 4 Dead 2 mods? I play both games all of the time and I've seen him mentioned several times. I don't intend on making my custom stories perfect. I am just avid to add new monsters, funny sound effects, new music (even if it's copyrighted, some companies really don't care), trolling moments, interesting plot and storyline, okay voice acting, and new textures and models for the carpeting, paintings, walls, vases, and wooden objects. I have to wait for GTA 5 to come out on PC before starting that one, but I could probably start the Scooby-Doo one or Somalia one at the end of May. I hope it all goes well as planned, it very well may not and my custom stories may wander in limbo forever. Sometimes modding ideas just don't work out because of stubborn models not letting you retexture them, confusion, troubleshooting, time consumption, concentration, and difficulty. It's always a scary and depressing thought for any kind of artist. In any case, I am doing some forms of art during summertime.

Well, he did the level design and programming, basically. He hasn't worked on L4D2 mods and is rarely on DA, I talk to him all the time though. The new music was made by BluePython. So, honestly, it was a collaboration between three people. Modeling characters, texturing them, rigging and animating them are all on a whole different level of difficulty. That's all the stuff I do. To be honest, I just like making things from scratch, but retexturing is actually easy, once you have the UV map set up for it. It's all about extracting information and allowing yourself to work on it. Then, the modifications of code come into play. That's how the retexturing works. Newbies tend to have issues regarding that, but that's all part of a learning process.

But all that aside, you just have to put some time into working on creating a decent storyline, characters, and puzzles (in the case of the Penumbra/ Amnesia series).Β

That was very helpful, thanks a bunch Jeff! I have the Coward's Debt, but I can't find chemical #1. I completely agree that an Amnesia custom story is a great start to 3d modeling, game design, and 3d art. What program do you use to retexture? Model editor? Would a photoshop texture or a real texture from google images work on an amnesia model (ex. a table or wallpaper?) I also will start making a practice custom story that contains every single custom monster ever encountered, but it will not be posted anywhere because I do not want copyright infringement from other modders. I know i'm using some music and sound effects (I get it from Youtube or Itunes) from probably copyrighted sources on my custom stories that will be posted, but I don't think it will be a problem. A few have been taken down because of that, but I think it's a low-risk. I can always swap files that aren't copyrighted. I plan on making at least 5 custom monsters, but i'm confused with 3D modeling in Maya (is that what you use?)

I can't help you with the game mod. I was there, beta testing it for Damascus, but I didn't get to help with making it. I don't remember too much from it, just because I've had a busy couple weeks.

Just so you know, I don't re-texture anything, I make all my models from scratch. My textures are a combination of real-life photographs (ones that I take, because it's potentially copy-right if done any other way with anyone else's pictures... that is to say, without their permission) and my own ability to draw. I even made some of the textures from scratch by just drawing and painting.Β I use photoshop, primarily. Everyone is different, I know people who use gimp, sketchbook pro, paint, corel, etc. I also use a normal mapping program, specifically sculpting programs, to make high-def models to get normal maps from to make my textures pop even more.

Our music was made by someone, so our sources were not pre-copyrighted. He copy-righted it after we used it and he made the music solely for our mod. If you use music from copy-righted sources, do not post it or you may get sued.

I use Maya for 3d modeling, rigging, texturing and animating. It's a difficult program. I know some people who use 3DS MAX and Blender. Blender is a weird program, but it's entirely free. MAX is known for being one of the best 3d modeling programs around, but it sucks at animation and rigging. 5 custom monsters sounds like a lot, especially if they are your first. I'd suggest one or two. Good luck!

This is so helpful, and I think that i'll have a ton of fun doing these custom stories. Unfortunately, I absolutely have to use some copyrighted content in order to make the custom stories turn out the way they're supposed to. For example, if I want to make a Scooby-Doo one, I need voice clips and Scooby-Doo music. The Scooby-Doo Amnesia idea was inspired byΒ peppermintjam.deviantart.com/a… . I also had the plan in mind before seeing this awesome picture. The GTA 5 one will need sound clips and music from the actual game too, but i'm not doing that until the arseholes release it on PC hopefully next fall. Maybe then I can find Trevor's model as well as all sound files instead of making him from scratch. First, as I said, I am doing a test custom story that features every single monster and custom monster that I've encountered so far. There will be different monsters in different levels (when you open the doors to a new area). I'm thinking of each level featuring a different monster and making the monster fit the environment better. This is one of the songs that I want to use in an Amnesia custom storyΒ www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gi1hZp… Think it would be cool to see in Amnesia? This custom story is only going to be made for a few people (including you and Damascus if you want), so copyright won't be an issue. I'm only going to ask for permission to use some content from A Coward's Debt and The Great Work including the weeper, intelligencer, and golem. Even though Damascus doesn't want anyone else using them in uploaded custom stories, I still think it's okay if I don't upload it for anyone to see or play (it won't be uploaded anywhere, I promise you guys). I'll just send it by email or share from google drive. BTW, I beat and won A Coward's Debt. It was a really good storyline, but the ending pissed me off. I wish it had a happy ending even though Jean sounded like an arse. Something funny is how I thought the Weeper's head and neck looked like a penis XD. What are Motionbuilder, Softimage, and Smoke like? Have you ever tried them before? I have Maya, Mudbox, and Blender. I also have Adobe Audition CS6 and Adobe Photoshop CS6 Extended. If you guys would ever like to help me out with my custom stories, then feel welcome, even though I really don't think it would happen. Probably because I still need a story and everything. Tips, advice, and directions with certain parts I get stuck on would be highly appreciated, though. Are you the one who created the custom monsters?Β

Crisosphinx In reply to White-Knuckles [2014-04-17 21:41:33 +0000 UTC]

I created all the creatures, their textures, their animations, a few of the assets from the the two mods (chairs and tables for example, the pikachu doll from The Great Work). I also worked on Fekete Keres 2 (the monsters/ girls and a lot of objects including walls that pulse and such).Β

Damascus ultimately left the decision up to me, as far as letting people use my monsters. I said no to most people, because nearly no one credits me and because I wanted Damascus to keep it as his. The mods were presents from me to him, specifically the monsters and models I made/ added.Β

I don't use all of those programs, but I've played with a few. Mudbox is like zbrush, but it's weird, to me. Smoke, softimage and motionbuilder are all foreign concepts to me. Softimage is good for cad and modeling from what I saw, but I don't like it. I don't like blender, but I can't speak for everyone. I use Audition cs3, photoshop cs3, a few cameras, a cintiq tablet, maya, zbrush, bitmap2material, alchemy, 3dcoat, headusUV, audacity, a voice recorder, and a few homebrewed tools in maya.

I'm no good at coding or programming (usually, but I'm learning programming right now on my own time). I'd give you a ton of advice, if I could, but it's all really difficult stuff. 9 hours of the day, I work at Nissan Automotive, so... I'm not home all the time either.

White-Knuckles In reply to Crisosphinx [2014-04-17 22:41:31 +0000 UTC]

I loved Fekete Keres! Is the 2nd one released yet? I've been waiting for a sequel to it. If so, what is it called? Did you create the grudge girl custom monster, and is she able to be used as a hostile enemy? So, which of the programs that you mentioned is best for texturing and painting models? I just downloaded a few of them. What program do you need to make the "skeleton" for the monster? Is that Maya as well? I really wish that there was a female hostage like the ones in Justine in Amnesia, it would give gamers more ideas for custom stories. As for advice, i'll probably be asking when i'm stuck on something. Otherwise i'll keep watching tutorials, troubleshooting, and learning all of the tools. For my first custom story, it will pretty much be private between me and a few friends. I don't want to piss off any other respectable modders by using their monsters without their permission. Btw, what is cad that you mentioned?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Crisosphinx In reply to White-Knuckles [2014-04-18 00:27:30 +0000 UTC]

Just Fekete Keres 2, from what I know. I remodeled and textured the girl (I guess I kind of did texture... but I don't consider it my work). I also re-rigged it. I made a few other things for their mod, no spoilers though! Well, except I did make a new monster for it and he's kinda creepy.

The skeleton is part of a rig. I do all my rigging in Maya. As previously stated, Max is horrible for animation.

CAD is a specific type of model. Polygon is what Max, Maya and Blender typically use. CAD or nurb data is used by all three of those, but their nurb data tends to be very... Round...

Typical CAD data can be made in Alias or Rhino. It's used for engineers and designers.

Easiest way to think of it is... Polygon = Pixel while CAD = Vector. They behave in some of the same ways. Nurb/ CAD data is easy to texture, but is extremely heavy in math. Polygonal data is harder to UV map and texture but is lightweight.

Well, like I said, CAD is similar to vectors, which means that it uses Curves and lines instead of point-by-point-by-point modeling, not to say that CAD can't be modeled in the same way that Polygons are modeled... Essentially, CAD is based around curves. It utilizes more math to make the geometry it shows, also using more math to automatically UV map objects. It projects UV's onto its planes equally and allows seamless material mapping. CAD does all the math for you. Polygons are based on math as well. Only difference is that it's not as heavy as CAD but requires users to modify them more. They optimal for putting into video games because the amount of math (calculations, space, etc.) is not as big as nurbs/CAD. Old games use to use CAD/nurbs.

I know of Tenebris Lake and Obscurity, but never played them nor did I work on them.

Maya has many output files. Naturally, it saves Maya ASCII and Binary. 3D modeling can be done simply or can be done with a lot of effort. Either way, the skill needed to make things look great is high and requires a lot of practice, patience and time. I suggest only sticking to one or two monsters MAX because of everything you will need to learn, work on, and do.

Texturing is a process done outside of Maya. It's assembled in Maya but only to be shown, unless it's permanently stuck in Maya (feature films, animations, etc.). To be honest, you don't need all those and torrents are NOT the way to go (I assume that that is what is being used, since each one of those programs cost $500 to $1500+).

Max is horrible at animation, but great at modeling. Maya is ok at modeling, but great at animation. It depends on your workflow and style. I prefer Maya, but it's not for everyone. MAX use to be used for games, primarily. Maya is starting to be used more and more. 3D modelers are just that, modelers. They aren't animators. I'm an animator and I primarily use Maya. In addition to that, I'm also a generalist. So, to answer your question, yes, only for MAX.

I have the programs installed already, actually. They're all good programs, but I want to start using them. Do CAD models work in Amnesia TDD, or only polygons? Would you recommend that I create the model in Max, sculpt and paint with zbrush and somewhat Mudbox, and animate in Maya? Which program did you do most of the sculpting and painting in? Does a drawing tablet make 3D modeling way easier, and do you have to draw some models with the tablet? I have a Bamboo Create that I got during christmas 2 years back, and I finally want to start using it for something really cool and productive. It would sure make me feel way less lazy and unproductive. I'd like to start doing instead of daydreaming, and I need these programs to do so. How often do you play Amnesia custom stories? And are you on steam with an unfilled friends list? So far I've spent 108 freaking hours playing Amnesia because I love it so much. I have the steam version, but I still need to buy AMFP during the summer sale. I'll be saving our conversation to a doc so I can look back at your great advice when the time to start creating the monster comes. I made L4D2 sound mods successfully, now I finally want to make 3D addons. Amnesia seems to be the perfect place to start.

Crisosphinx In reply to White-Knuckles [2014-04-20 01:43:42 +0000 UTC]

No. Polygons only, it would be silly to kill the game with CAD data. I guess if you really want to do something convoluted? I paint in photoshop, I do my uv map in maya and texture in photoshop. Easy as pie, but hard to get looking good. No, it does not, not at all. It's only good for painting. You really only need one or two programs. Programs don't give you skill, you need to develop the skill on your own. It sounds like you've never had modeling experience, which means that this is going to be very difficult to get in to.

I rarely play custom stories because it's not engaging for me anymore. PewDiePie ruined everything I loved about Amnesia and his followers usually annoy me. I do game development on the side. As a result, due to my nature, I'm a work-a-holic and thus am more motivated and focused to make something than play it, not saying that I don't play games. I have a filled friendslist, but I don't get on steam much at all anymore. I like my old games more than new games, though I like how horror games are beginning to actually scare me... to some extent... After you start making mods for a game, the game is no-longer scary or is barely scary due to the nature of development. You see all the hardware underneath, all the bugs and glitches and dumb stuff to make something seem scary.

AMFP is really bad. Not scary in any sense.

L4D2 and Amnesia have completely different engines. It's going to mess with you if you think it's going to be easy to develop for both. I was the only person, outside of the developers of Amnesia, to successfully create rigs that could be animated and imported into Amnesia, it took me 1 whole month to figure it out. No one on the forums really understands how to do it.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

White-Knuckles In reply to Crisosphinx [2014-04-20 05:05:42 +0000 UTC]

You're right, just as I suspected. No, I don't have any experience yet, but I am interested in 3D modeling and modding becoming a big hobby. I know AMFP is supposed to be bad and not scary at all, but I think it looks interesting and the models I can import into Amnesia TDD level editor. I saw some models in ACD and I liked them, but of course I can still import them into the level editor too. Would CAD data crash the game? And if not, would it really turn out that much cooler looking than polygon data? I'd love to become more motivated and focused and develop rather than worrying about playing with it. Amnesia never had to be scary in order to satisfy me. The storyline, custom monsters, map, environment, and suspense are the main reasons why I love Amnesia so much. I do love jumpscares, though. Even though I am sometimes afraid of them. I see how your opinion changes of a game after you develop for it, but it always inspires me even more. It's also different playing your own custom story, because you know exactly what is going to happen since you planned it, created it, and tested it seemingly 24/7. But for me, it would inspire me to keep playing my own custom story over and over to appreciate the masterpiece that I've created. I probably could also add onto it as well to make it even better. I know that the L4D2 and Amnesia modding is very different, but I have the potential to learn and concentrate on new concepts. I only want to make a few things for L4D2 anyway, I may not make any L4D2 3D content at all. I am for sure making 3D content for Amnesia. What exactly are these "rigs that could be animated and imported into Amnesia"? What exactly is rigging? Does it have something to do with creating your own monster? Other people have done it besides developers, and people who already know how to do it could probably teach us somehow. Some of my Custom monsters for the scooby doo custom story will be very simplistic and will not require professional digital painting. Some will be more professional like whichever 2 custom monsters I make for Amnesia: Somalia. I have no problem at all with Pewdiepie, but I hate his extremely neurotic fans. Pewdiepie is a very happy and optimistic person, and I liked the Stephano thing he does in his Amnesia videos. Don't let any of those mentally-disturbed idiots ruin any part of Amnesia for you. At first, they did for me, but then I kept playing more custom stories and discovered how many sane and talented Amnesia custom story creators there are. Hell, even 2 of them were proven Pewdiepie fans. Their custom stories were great and the storyline was really good. Sometimes Amnesia can be a scary experience for me, and sometimes it can be funny as hell and have "trolling" moments. Someday i'm going to need friendly people like Pewdiepie or Markiplier to promote my custom stories by uploading silly walkthroughs of them on youtube, i'd like them to play and appreciate my game. Please don't let any obnoxious Youtube twits get on your nerves or crush your inspiration and dreams. I actually have made a GMOD video once in 8th grade, it wasn't the best, but it took me 28 hours total and I got pretty neutral feedback on it, and absolutely no appreciation. My old dream in 8th grade was to make funny gmod and source filmmaker videos that people would like, but I then rethought and realized how shitty and obnoxious the youtube community truly is. I think that the Amnesia, Steam, and DA communities are different. But i've still met my fair-share of assholes here too on my old account. I have experience with GMOD posing, video editing, the basics of photoshop, guided file cracking, and sound mod creating. If I can do this, then I am certain that I can also eventually learn 3D modeling too.

CAD will crash any game related engine in the modern day. Game engines aren't built to work with CAD/nurb data anymore and no one really makes any engines built to run it anyways.

To be completely honest, PDP is really annoying. I don't see him as optimistic and he USED his fans to get money. It's, quite frankly, rude to use his fans as objects and not as people. his videos are annoying as heck, because he is extremely immature, rude, and incapable of speaking anything intellectual. I am very against rape, yet he jokes about it. Markiplier is the same way, except he does it for fame and for charity. I tried to talk to Markiplier a few times, and as a developer for TGW, you would think he would have talked to me. Instead, he ignored me, made rude comments about Damascus and I, got his fans to email me with hate mail about kicking us in the nutsack. I never received an apology and people continued to do that to me until 5 months after his video aired. PDP also ignored me about a request and his idiot fans did tell me that I was selfish for asking for a bit of his time. Seriously a what-the-hell moment on both ends.Β

Sorry for the tangent...

I suggest you spend some time to mess with the game engine. I know you're pretty young and inexperienced with the game field/ industry. You need to learn this stuff without the help of someone like me, who is very busy most of the time... Rigging is basically making puppet strings for your character with controls, handles, attributes, weights, etc. To make a rig is to give your character a skeleton, even if it has no skeleton. You have to bind the skin (model) to the skeleton (rig with controls) and make sure it's perfect before animating. Then animation needs proper weight, motion, poses, keys, etc. The textures NEED to not be black and have color on them. You need to UV the model before coloring it. Then for color you need a ton of different maps. You take the entire model with its animation, export it, import it to the engine, apply the textures, code the character, code the timing, make sounds, import the sounds, code the sounds, time the sounds to the attacks and movements, code the character to the map you have, assuming you've already made it.

I sure thought so, but someday i'll work with CAD just for fun (just to make a 3D CAD model of something). I wonder what consoles CAD was used on before being replaced by polygons? I always knew my entire life that videogames use polygons, my SNES starfox game taught me that. Markiplier, you f**king asshole. Goodbye useless youtube subscription! I now hate him for what he did to you. And the prick still played and loved the Great Work! I would have reported him and said that he has no right to post his playthroughs of your custom story for being such a jerk. He's a wannabe pewdiepie anyways. There are too many of them. I completely agree that pewds never has anything intellectual to say, but I always have to watch his custom story walkthroughs to figure out what to do next when i'm stuck. I also enjoyed them because of the Stephano thing he does, but he sometimes annoys me. He seems like a nice guy, he does like his fans, but I know he's making money off them too. I just think he's extremely overrated and he sometimes introduces trolls and f**ked up people who have problems into the franchise. I knew about Amnesia way before I ever heard of pewdiepie, so i'm not one of his fangirl-trolls. As for rape, I completely understand especially if you know a person who has been raped. I know a girl who was, but it was sort of her fault for drinking and trusting the prick. She filed no charges against him. At first I thought she was lying, but it sounds pretty legit to me. The creep got her wasted and she passed out, and he pretty much had unauthorized sex with her while passed out. His excuse was that it was her responsibility to have sex with him. I hate people like that and I am not into romance for sex. Sometimes I like funny custom stories, but I highly prefer the serious ones with an epic story and custom monsters. The ones I plan on starting out with will be more funny ones, but not filled with the brim of stupid shit that gets old very fast. I know one of my more serious custom stories will be Amnesia Somalia and Camp-crystal-lake. Or else maybe Damascus would be interested in making a Friday the 13th custom story? I just think it's a great idea.

I plan on starting Amnesia: Death Row at the end of May. Death Row will be about a man who is on death row in Transylvania for a crime that he didn't even commit. You start out in a modified version of Amnesia: Justine's cabinet of perturbation. It will have every single custom monster and monster that I've encountered in Amnesia so far (which is well over 20). Almost every level will be a fitting environment for each unique monster and each level will have an interesting name. I need to figure out how to rig that dead body of the guy you take blood from to get past the sewer shrooms. He will be an enemy that walks in a shuffling motion and looks exactly the same as he does in game. I will need to talk to Damascus a little bit at the end of the month before starting. Mainly to tell him how much I appreciate and love his and your custom stories. The levels are scripted so well! I'm also needing to take images from google and make them into paintings that you see, and some stuff needs to be retextured. Don't even worry about copyright issues, because this will not be posted on ModDB. I would love to, but first I would have to screw around asking every single modder if it's okay to use their creature in my story. It also may contain copyrighted music in it (I wouldn't know if it were copyrighted or not, so I am not to shame). It's only being shared between me and a few friends (including you and Damascus). There will be a few immature moments in it, but otherwise I will try to make the storyline sound serious. It will have some unique elements of my favorite custom stories in it as well. I absolutely hate really short custom stories, especially if they are ones where the modder attempts to make it funny but fails at doing so (like House of Creep or Death House). I also usually dislike when they're ones that say there will be a part 2, but it never gets released. Especially when the ending is you opening the exit door while running from a monster, and then the credits play. Some people just really suck and fail to amuse me. You really remind me of my best friend on here. Both of ya are more serious, friendly gentlemen, and passionate artists who work on art out of love instead of fame. He's a cartoonist and we both love this childhood videogame of ours called Ty the Tasmanian Tiger. And if you can, read my latest journal that tells my art plans. You are such a talented man, Jeff, and I can't thank you enough for giving me advice.Β

Someone took it for their video game and a few others made prints or claimed it as theirs..Β

Hmm... I wouldn't have gotten so worked up over something like that. Unless it was DA making money off of your art without giving you a cut.

Other people were making money off of it.
