در یکی از زیارت ها با تعبیر «داعِیَ اللّه» از امام مهدی( عج ) یاد شده است: اَلسَّلامُ عَلَیکَ یا داعِیَ اللّه. درباره دلیل این نام گذاری نقل شده است که آن حضرت از جانب خداوند متعال مأموریت دارند تا مردم را به سوی پروردگارشان فرا خوانند. ایشان در این راه، به اندازه ای تلاش خواهند کرد تا آیین الهی در سرتاسر جهان حاکمیّت پیدا کند و جز دین خدا، هیچ مکتب و تفکری، ادعای جهان داری و راهنمایی بشر را نداشته باشد.

برای امام زمان( عج ) بیش از سیصد لقب ذکر شده که هر یک بر بعد خاصی از شخصیت و ویژگی های اخلاقی و روحی آن حضرت دلالت دارد.

از جمله آنها: مهدی، منصور، قائم، حجت الله، صاحب الامر، خلف صالح، بقیة الله، منتقم، موعود، خاتم الاوصیا، داعی، باسط، ثائر، صاحب الزمان، ولی اللّه، خلیفة الرحمان، برهان، سیّد و منتظر و «داعی».
