Hey there! Sorry I haven't gotten back to you sooner. It's been a pretty rough time for Kat and I lately. I dunno if you read my last journal entry...it explains it pretty well. Anyway, hope you ware well. It was great meeting both of you at APE this year. ALSO, how much do you charge for a pin-up? I'd like to get you involved in a project we got going.

Hey, it's no problem, I read your journal entry a while ago but I've been debating with myself for what to say.

It's horrible to be in your situation and I really do send my condolences. Just before APE I had lost my grandma, and there have been two more deaths in the family since then, so I understand a little. Nobody can truly understand what someone goes through in these situations. I hope that you and Kat stay strong and can lean on each other during these hard times.

Drowning myself in Final Fantasy XI has helped me a lot lately. I worry if I'm just not addressing the point though... I haven't really taken the time to let anything seep-in yet.

A pin-up, huh? I'm thinking, like, $50 or so... You're a friend though, how much were you thinking about paying? I'd love to be part of whatever you're cooking up. It's been a while since I did some sexy girl pictures.

I've been meaning to ask. Do you use the complimentary color technique when making skin tone? As in using red and green, blue and orange, yellow and purple, to make the skin tone. It's suppose to make the skin look more realistic.

Wait...I know! I'll use my "Artist Sense" to figure it out. Hmmmm....come on....I'm starting to feel it.....tingling...it's tingling....It's Tingling!...IT'S TINGLING!!!...my leg fell asleep.

From what I can see, you might be using it; whether you know it or not. But that might just be the cooler colors of the shadows.

Just wondering....

DarkRedPhantomX In reply to ADKreations [2010-01-02 05:10:28 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I try to keep a color wheel in-mind while coloring. Sometimes I go crazy and add insane greens and stuff which either magically make the picture perfect or ruin it. Skin is one of the most difficult things to color because of how much is really going on there.

You gotta think that first of all, it's translucent so that light travels within it as well as on it, then there are your veins and arteries that will either give you skin a green or a red tint and then there's all the pigment that your skin already has. Then you gotta think that the shadows also have all those characteristics and whatever lighting you choose for that picture, the way those shadows lay and the colors they cast can be completely different.

What about you?

ADKreations In reply to DarkRedPhantomX [2010-01-02 08:34:39 +0000 UTC]

What about me?! Hahaha. Um. That's about it.

I'm actually a little new to coloring (don't let my gallery fool you). I usually just do line art without any shading. I've gotten this far because of my knowledge of art theory (in other words, I know how to do things but don't have any experience doing them).

As for skin coloration, they developed a technique during the Renaissance, I believe. Using complimentary colors to create skin tone. People always grab the brown or peach to create the skin tone. Using complimentary colors, you can achieve the same thing but with a more realistic skin tone. What I mean by this, is that when you mix complimentary colors you end up with brown. The reason the picture you were working on looked better with some green added was because it complimented the skin tone you were going for. I start by putting down the lightest color (for me orange), then putting it down darker in the areas that need it, then for darker colors adding the complimentary color (blue). When you have too much orange or blue in one spot, add it's complimentary color to dull the color to brown. It takes a little practice, and a light hand doesn't hurt.

A quick sample of skin tones.

Chinese - yellow and purple
Tanned - red and green
Pale - blue and orange

As for veins and arteries, I don't think they matter too much. If you want people to see them (vein popping out of forehead?), then color them. Otherwise, I don't think it matters too much. How often do you notice people's veins?

Oh yeah! I used that technique on this picture (though it's washed out with yellow) [link] .

But everybody has their own technique.
