It might be because I know a lot of Marth fans who have no idea who he is, or claim to love the guy but have yet to touch the manga or game. Or even the OVA.
(There are more genuine Marth fans, at least, than the other Melee FE rep. Roy fans that still exist never played enough or any of FE6 if they continue to stick to the character).
Any Marth fans I know? Not specifically, most of my friends (on and offline) who enjoy Fire Emblem either are fans of the American games or FE4 onward.
And just cause I feel like clarifying what kind of fan I am, I've played some of FE2, most of FE7 (got right to the end but lost the game), FE9, and am currently on FE10. I have read the FE1 manga (the parts in English and a majority of the untranslated version) and seen the OVA to understand the Akanea plot beyond internet summaries.

As far as my story behind the Fire Emblem scene, I've played both FE1 and FE3, but only went through the first 5 chapters, I played FE6 and FE7 for about 15 chapters, I played all the way through FE8 and FE9, and I have FE10, but haven't gotten to play it yet. lol

The OVA was very different from the manga, and I prefer the manga. But the OVA has good voice acting choices, generally. This is the Japanese version, anyways.

Yeah. The thing is, I'm proud that I became a fan of Marth not through Smash, but the OVA and background, and eventually the manga. THEN I went to play Melee and he soared on my favorite character list. In modern FE fandom, that puts me at a different level, huh.

Oh my. It definitely does. I knew Marth from Smash, then went into a background check after I played as him for a little and enjoyed it. ^_^ Although I wish I would've known Marth the same way you did, but that's alright. So Marth really brought me into the world of Fire Emblem. Even in this world, I still followed Marth all the way through. And here I am now. One of the biggest Marth fans that I believe there is. I'm not disappointed with my self one bit. ^_^ I see no reason of why I should be.

No need to! I'm just saying I thought Marth was cool in Melee but never really bothered to play as him besides unlocking everyone, until years later. I got Fire Emblem 7 only because everyone said it was an amazing game, and I loved the art style.
