I am a greek fan ever since Spawn #10 till Cerebus #300.

Even tho I came late to the party, and the story didn't really make a lot of sense to me (because I guess I came late to the party), I just felt the need to connent now, after all these years, and say 'Hi!'.

Dear Mr. Sim,

Β  Β  Β  Β  With all due honors I am a struggling illustrator myself. I would like to turn your attention to my own personal website. www.skizamarts.com I do this not to advertise myself to you, but to kindly ask your wishes, approval and permission to make use of your character Cerebus. As he appears within the story line of my own personal illustrated story. What has been noted of the character cerebus within my story is as is. And I don't feel that there will be any other appearances of himself. To this day I have not earned any profit from the offering of my website to the public, but so as I seek for publishing in the future I found it necessary to ask for your approval. Otherwise I may have to redesign and rewrite certain factors of the story line. You may notice also there is a parallel I draw with the Flaming carrot who I will also be seeking correspondence with the author and illustrator. No pressure. It is a bit of a extensive in size site. So take your time. If you wish to answer my correspondence with you wikelise.deviantart.com is the place. As I have always loved the story cerebus, I could not think of a better cameo of a character to utilize to get the point across.Β

Β  Β  Β  Β  Β  Β  Β  Β  Β  Β  Thank you for your time and consideration

Weird. I bought issue one of glamourpuss in a comic shop the other day, and upon completion Β I thought to myself "I should look this fellow up on Deviantart." I don't know why the thought occurred. I've never looked for a comic artist on this site before but... low and behold you have an account! Fabulous Dhaling.Β

Hi, Dave! I've been a big fan of your work for over 20 years now. Cerebus still ranks in my "Top 3 Greatest Comics of All Time" list. I still revisit it from time to time and it's always fresh. You sense of storytelling and pacing is phenomenal. I also like your Ellisonian knack of writing essays that are just as engaging (if not moreso sometimes) as the actual work.

Anyway, I did have an actual question. Years ago there was issue of Following Cerebus that was on the theme of copyright. There were a number of great essays in there. I can't find my copy anywhere and I was wondering if they were posted online somewhere? I know the Cerebus Fangirl site has a number of essays, but those particular ones don't seem to be up. If not, I'll just look on ebay or something, I guess.

Thanks for everything!

Love your stuff; writing and art...and Gerhard's stuff too.

Long story I'll try to keep short.
Going through boxes of old school *cough* comics this last august I find
I have almost all of "Cerebus" from "Guys" through to # 300.
I have to admit that reading the essays and diatribe, while ten years or more in the past, has been very bracing and inspiring.
Poverty precludes my outright purchasing all the collected "phone book" graphic novel versions that I don't have ie "Reads, Minds" etc. them so I thought I'd try and get my local library to support a Canadian Artist! by bringing in your books.
It was while doing that I found out you were on DA.
How does one say hello in this context?...
Ah..yer gonna cut me down no matter what so whatev
Love your work and would probably "tap out" in a debate depending on the subject.
(( fan boy...wow...Dave Sim...wow..Dave Sim is on DA!!))

It occurs to me that Scott McCloud may have done something similar to Glamourpuss with "Understanding Comics" and "Reinventing Comics", which were meditations on comics through the comics form. But still...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 0

penilius [2011-06-07 03:12:29 +0000 UTC]

I will admit Glamourpuss has had some moments.

I picked up a few issues. I appreciate it for being quite innovative. It may even be brilliant. No one's done anything quite like it as far as I can think of.

However, I still would love to see something like a story.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 0

penilius [2011-06-07 03:07:01 +0000 UTC]

I will say that I enjoyed the Cerebus as Shepherd storyline. That was more of a "return to form."

Some of my favourite Cerebus stuff was the issues where you could tear through an issue in maybe 5 minutes, but then pore over the thing a hundred times afterwards.

I note that much of your original rationale for an extended storyline and largely ignoring fan requests is now gone (namely that you set yourself to working on one character/storyline for 26 years).

Therefore: how about something catchy?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 0

penilius [2011-06-06 02:52:05 +0000 UTC]

Yes, yes, I know. "I do it my way." You are like George Thorogood making country music. If I don't like it, don't buy it.

But to be fair, you are, as you are aware, finished Cerebus. As far as I know, you don't have any other plans.

So why not some sort of crowd pleaser? How about some vintage Sim? A "return to form."

penilius [2011-05-24 03:06:00 +0000 UTC]

Mr. Sim,

Once Glamourpuss is finished, why not do a fan-pleaser?

Like most of your long-suffering fans, I hold out hope that you will one day put together something with a storyline, some humour, some travel.

But no Cerebus please. I am tired of this character. And please no pages of typeset text. And please no grandiose endings.

What I miss, and I think most Cerebus fans are like me on this, is your gift for storytelling, pacing, humour, characterization. The things that your fans love, but that somehow seem to have been of little interest to you for many years now.

I have always felt that you were wrong that Cerebus fans miss the barbarian stuff.

Now, I know that you could care less about fan requests. You do it your way. So why bother making the request?

Mostly frustration. I would love to pick up a Dave Sim story with a quirky story and interesting characters and odd pacing. And you are still around to produce such a work and could probably do it easily. It would probably be a joy to read something along those lines.

And yet you won't do it.

Sincerely,
typical frustrated Dave Sim fan

Hey there,

I'm working on an album at the moment "TV Isn't Reality" and really admire your comic style. The idea for the artwork is a man holding a TV remote to his head like a gun as if about to blow his brains out.

I'm writing to find out if you would be up for drawing this and how much you would charge?

At 37, I haven't purchased, let alone read a comic book in ages. With things the way they are--speaking of the economy--I pretty much sold any and every collectible, of any, even of little value, I had. Saying as much, the idea of selling pieces of my Cerebus collection has come to mind, followed by an overwhelming feeling that It would be akin to selling the likes of one of my appendages. Cerebus is like a fine wine, -- I truly appreciate the level of craftmanship attained within all the more, the older I get. Can't say that about many in the field ( well, in my humble opinion ). Thanks for befriending me ,sir, and all the best.

Regarding Frank Frazetta: My father and FF suffered two strokes about the same time, a coincidence that led me to offer my help to the Frazettas. . . .

I met Ellie at the gallery after Frank's second stroke and talked to her about how it affected him. She said he was trying to turn southpaw to draw and paint and she told me point blank and dejected that the attempts were futile. "He'll never do it."

So, sometime later, as a self-trained ambidexter, a licensed psychologist and artist, I wrote her a letter offering to train Frank to draw and paint lefty. I even enclosed a copy of a drawing I had done with my left hand to show I was sincere, if somewhat naive.

I never got a reply - maybe because of the drawing? - but wouldn't you know, Frank started back with modeling and sculpting, and, if I've heard true, eventually accomplished his goal of drawing and painting left handed. He did it himself, as one would expect.

It's very difficult to watch a loved one struggle. We lose perspective because we can't be objective - we feel too much for them. We have to view them as strangers in order to fully appreciate them for who they are apart from us to experience the power of their motives and convictions and witness their capacities for pain, suffering, and frustration. Just because he made it look easy, doesn't mean he wasn't tough. He was. He could struggle and persevere. He could. He did. Bravo!
