I can give you a few tips and explain to you the steps I go through when I make an oekaki drawing.
(I also use these steps when I make a background c
READY, SET, GO MINI TUTORIAL GO!!!:
Note: first of all, when I say 'layers', I don't mean the GIMP/Photoshop definition of a layer. By layer, I mean what I lay on the canvas first.
ALWAYS start with the 'back layer' first. In the painting I did below, the back layer would be the sky. Paint on each layer according to distance and importance on your picture. The layers with the greatest importance are the ones that provide the 'base' for your picture.
For example, in the picture below, here's how I ordered the layers according to how important they were (#1 being the first layer):
1. sky + sun
2. sea (including details)
3. cape
4. rocks and waves
5. character
6. beams from the sun + shading
7. any extra details that add to the picture
Never, ever, EVER start with the least important layer! That is extremely important. Starting with this layer WILL ruin your entire picture and make it look messy. The usual tendency when making a picture that has more than one layer is to start with the focal object first. Oftentimes, this is why people screw up when making oekaki paintings.
One more tip:
Strive to not give a damn.
No, seriously.
If you don't think about your work too much, the picture will look amazing. Make the picture according to your intuition. When you think too much about what is right when making a painting, the left half of your brain will take over and the creative right half will be left behind.
When you don't actively think about what looks better in a painting/picture and just go along with it, instead letting your subconscious decide what looks best, your brain actually fires more neurons and works harder.
I hope that helped you! I promised a tutorial about how I make backgrounds/paint pictures awhile ago - hopefully that suffices for now.

Well, there are a few ways to play.
First way: You respond to my comment with a more detailed version of my drawing, then I respond to yours with an even more detailed drawing, and so on. The location can be changed, but the character must stay the same (though you are free to change the style of it).
The loser is the first one to admit defeat or put down their art skills.
Second version: The rules are generally the same as the first way, except you can pick whatever subject and background you want. The loser is the first to admit art block, defeat, or put down their art skills.
Third version: This version is the least competitive. Basically, the point is to create a story with the drawings. You must keep the scenery and the original character the same, but you are allowed to add objects or other characters that match the environment. No dialogue is allowed - just pictures. You may throw the story into whatever direction you want, but what is going on in your picture must be understandable to the other player. There are two ways for the game to end: The other player becomes stuck because they become confused as to where the story is going, or the story meets the end point.
