Did you happen to go to the Fort no. 4 reenactment last weekend after all? I remember you saying that your unit had similar uniforms to the King's Rangers, and there were definitely a few of those there. Plus there were people looking for someone named Clayton, and I'm guessing it's not that common a name If that is the case that you were there with your Ranger-impersonating group, one of our guys was possibly mistaken for you. So you know.

Sorry to be getting back to you so late. I was there and I do know the gent who was mistaken for me (Crystal I guess thought she saw me and called for me, but it turned out to be one of your gents). I commanded Lee's Company, Warner's Regiment (American rangers). I wore the green and red-faced regimentals and was in the middle of the American line between all the artillery pieces on Sunday (and on Saturday, I commanded the effort right against the river- between the artillery and the Connecticut).
I actually was the officer who grabbed one of your King's Rangers who normally does a 1st NH portrayal, on Sunday, and chained him up.
But I was all over the place, that weekend, from the American camp, to the Brits (mainly to talk to Horst and Deb), the infamous Saturday night tavern in the Great Room, and everywhere else on the site. We undoubtedly ran into each other at some point. It's a shame though that we didn't organize a meeting. Next time I'll remember! I'll be there again for the F&I event but probably not Rev- I'll be down south hopefully in grad school by then.
Did you have a good weekend, though, despite the rain? I staid surprisingly warm. Had a great time.

You're welcome for the watch! Thanks for watching me back
I've met some fiddling Rangers in my time, but I don't think I've ever met you (though I have reenacted at some events where there were groups from VT) By your gallery I assume you're an American ranger, not one of the King's?
(Okay, that sounded creepier than I intended - I just enjoy finding other reenactors on DeviantArt.)

Now, what war do you reenact? I do both the French and Indian (a capitain des partisans/rangers- la Compagnie de Langis) and Rev War where I command Lee's Co'y, Warner's Regiment (VT/Green Mountain Boy). I have done Brit before, and was acting captain of HM's 21st, and occasionally had to turn coat and portray King's Rangers when there haven't been enough Brits, but I'm generally opposing them whenever I get a chance. It is good to toast "God save the King" every so often, however.
This year, I'll be at Ticonderoga twice, Fort 4 (NH), Crown Point twice, Hubbardton (VT), and Hillsboro (NH). If I can fit more in, I'll see to it. I'll also be working in Colonial Williamsburg as an intern this fall. I don't know where you live relative to any of those, but if ever you're around and attending one of them, I'd like to at least say hi (look for the dashing gent impersonating an officer)

I do Revolutionary War. I know one of the King's Rangers companies does French and Indian as well, but mine doesn't. You should come back to the King's Rangers ( That was a mandatory recruitment attempt.) It is good to toast "God Save the King"... also good to fall asleep at an event to the noise of the 10th Regiment singing it at the top of their lungs.
I'm going to be at Fort #4 in October! (I think it's October.. it was last time) I was there last year and had a great time Did you go to that one? I'm probably not going to be at Hubbardton because the Ranger women never go to that event for some reason.. apparently the men "rough it" because historically the unit had marched out without tents and such, so no camp follower has ever wanted to go with them. And I don't know what my unit's situation is with Ticonderoga. I really want to go though, because I've never been there, strangely enough.

haha, well I only do King's if they need rangers because my unit has the sam uniform (green with red facings). And I'll be at Fort 4 in June for the F&I, but I'll be at the Collage of William and Mary for the fall semester and thus not be able to make the October Fort 4. My unit did go (Warner's Regiment) last October, but I chose to go to Ft. Stanwix's event instead. You should really try and make the Hubbardton one though. It's a lot of fun. There are lots of tents set up (a normal encampment) so unless it's your own unit's preference not to do tents, &c., it the norm for the whole event.
But I'll be at Ti in June for their F&I, but again, because I'll be in VA this fall, I won't be going to the Sept. one. As far as I'm concerned, Ti's policies are actually pretty good (getting rid of the "mountain man" and "cowboy") it's really just how they put it out there that was not the good part. I've now joined this F&I umbrella organization that will be dealing directly with Ti to hopefully bring them to some sort of compromise or general agreement between the site and reenactors. Ah well... SO unless you go to Hubbardton or do an F&I event, I probably won't see you (at least this year). You should try to go to Hubbardton though!

I just met with my company today actually, and Hubbardton may happen for me after all. I hear that the American camp got pretty darn muddly a year or two ago due to rain, and the British found it very useful to camp on a hill
Your uniform must have different buttons than ours though Unless you stole it from a Ranger! Anyway, yeah, we sometimes field as other units too... I think recently we were used in place of Hessian Jagers, but that was not an event I was present for. I'm in the process of making a regimental coat now and it's killing me. Turns out that there's some new research going on about what the uniforms really looked like, and we may have to re-do everything in the coming years. Argh! You should still come join us though
(This is me fulfilling the duty that I was charged with today, and attempting to recruit people.)

Awesome! Hubbardton is a great event. But yes, it was rather muddy this past year... And perhaps the year before that, if I remember. Thick ground cloths is all I can say
But the buttons on our regimentals are just plain pewter. If we get called up to take the King's shilling for an event, it's rather impromptu.
Who knows. Maybe if my regiment's 1st Co'y keeps shafting me with the recruits for my company (Lee's Rangers), I will just turn coat! I get one in every 5 recruits or something, and they're all the unreliable ones. At most events, my company just ends up rolling up with 1st Co'y for lack of men and I'm demoted to private to fill the ranks. If that keeps happening, like I said, I might just make use of that regimental elsewhere! haha
Anyways, I like the recruiting attempts. Now how much will the king pay me?

IndifferentCentury In reply to FiddlingRanger [2011-02-14 17:56:47 +0000 UTC]
uh.... we'll pay you with our awesome cooking and music-making, how's that? And endless coffee in the mornings. If you do indeed play the fiddle, musicians are always welcome (if not forcibly conscripted
).
Oh, we also have loads of fun when off-duty - including "defending the important places of Fort #4": [link]
The only groundcloth I have for now is actually a tarp that gets hidden under wool blankets... it worked well enough last year but we're REALLY hoping to get a canvas one for this season.

FiddlingRanger In reply to IndifferentCentury [2011-02-14 18:56:10 +0000 UTC]
haha sounds like a good deal
I do indeed play the fiddle, as well as the Jaw Harp, and I sing (well). I prefer to sing and dance at events more though. I found that there are too many fiddlers and not enough dancing and singing at events. You can always find me contra or country dancing and I am /always/ singing some song or another.
I think I'll stick to my unit for now though They actually pay me in Continental. You should stop by sometime at Hubbardton. I run the tavern, the "Captain Tom." Because we get paid in Continental, we have an internal economy which we then use to gamble and buy... things... We do of course grant credit to those outside the unit- $3 to start, and at the end of the night, they usually owe $5 and can keep the profit as credit in the bank for next time. Great system all in all- we play chuck-a-luck, faro, and shut the box.
During the day, off the field, you are also more than welcome to join in a game of rounders with us (early baseball without rules). Lots of fun, that.
Anyways... we'll have to touch bases at one of these events. I'm sure much fun could be had by all

I'm always good for contra dancing and music I don't sing 'well' but I know loads of traditional songs, so if there are enough people to drown me out I love joining in.
Yep, if DA journals ever inform me that you are going to an event that I will also be at, I will make sure to find a way say hello even if we are enemies!

Well good! I know a good caller, an amazing fiddler (far better then me), and another few dancers, so if an event is ever lacking a dance, I'll start one up. Listen out for the music!
The only thing I know how to work on DeviantArt is the submissions, watching, and favoriting. The rest is all too complicated for me, let alone journals, &c. If you have a facebook account, I can friend you- there we could see what events the other will be going to.
And believe me, I have about as many Brit friends as American and French. I think one of my exes is a Brit too... Anyhow, I'm always hanging out with both sides

I'm working on scrimshawing another powderhorn right now, so I think within two-three weeks I should have pictures up of that. It's a map from 1777 from Fort Ticonderoga, NY, to Bennington, VT and Hoosick Falls, NY. I was commissioned by another reenactor to make it for him. It pays well and I love to do it!

Thank _you_ for the watch!
What portrayal are you getting into, specifically? French, British, Provincial? I'm guessing British because of Detroit, but I can't safely assume that?
But it is fun stuff! I do Rev War and F&I. It's gotten to a point where I'm now a commander of a company of Patriot rangers (Rev), 2nd sjt of a milice (F&I), was acting cap't of His Majesty's 21st (Rev), thinking of going into the British marines on HMS SOMERSET, and now I'm also a member of the King's Rangers, 1st Co'y (Rev). Just keeps getting bigger...
Well have fun with the F&I portrayal! I will tell you that Rev War is just as fun too!
