ah. bte, i have always wondered, how are schools set up in the UK?

well
this is completely from the beginning
ok
at the age of 3 you attend nursary where it's all fun and games
then you move onto a primary school
which is 3-13 years old [nursary is normally included].
some children leave primary school at 11 [but they do these exams called 11+ in order to leave] to move onto a secondary school, but some leave at 13 also [but you have to do common entrance exams in order to leave and get into your next school].
I left my primary school at 13 [so i did common entrance exams, which were pretty stressfull!] and then went on to secondary school [which is equivalent to high school in america]. Difference between some schools in america and some schools in uk, we wear uniform. Lmao!
anyways so secondary school runs from 11-18. but a student can leave school at 16 over here. so anyways, when you're in year 11 [grade 10, i think! 15-16 years old] you HAVE to do these exams called GCSEs which are a mega pain in the butt. These are exams taken throughout england and are seriously important for your future career and to help you stay at school. Ok, moving on, once completing GCSEs you have the option to leave school forever, move to a sixth form college [i'll come back to that] or stay at school and sit your AS levels and A-levels there. At AS level you only have to study four subjects of your choice and at A-level you have to drop one of your chosen subjects. AS and A levels are exams you sit in order to get into university. In sixth form [16-18] there are two years to complete, the first is AS year and then A level year, so really after GCSE you have no break from important exams.
ok, sixth form colleges are smaller schools which only admit 16-18 year olds. also you don't have a uniform here, you just were home clothes.
after AS level and A-level you can take a gap year [in which you have a year's break to do whatever] and then go to university until 21, I think. At university you do exams and then get a masters degree or whatever degree you want to specialise in in the future.
basically all round confusingness.
why how does the school system in america work?

wow, you take a lot of exams. but we do too i guess. okay, from the beginning.
here in the US, nursery school is day care. same word but its not required school. when you are about 3 or 4 you go to preschool which prepares you for the first real school which is kindergarden. some preschools offer kindergarden but most of the time kids start at the elementry school. elementry school is grades K-5 which is like ages 5-11. in public schools you are required to take a standardized test. the test has different names in every state but where i live it is called TAKS. You start taking these starting when you are about 8 years old. you don't have to pass them til you want to go to the next school, then you have to. following elementry school there is middle school, which is exactly how it sounds. its the school that is between high school and elementry school. some people call middle school 'junior high'. so middle school is grades 6-8 or ages 11-14. you still have to take the same standardized tests and its annoying. (i will come back to the tests later) after middle school there is high school. here, the grades are referred to in different terms. your first year there is 9th grade and you are a freshman. the 2nd year is 10th and you are a sophmore. 3rd year you are a junior and the last year you are a senior. the ages are like 15-18. so stadardized tests. they become more important in high school. if you dont pass them, you have to take a class the next year that trains you to pass it. your junior year is the last year you take them and you have to pass them to graduate. there are 4 subjects of the test: science, math, social studies, and english.
the difference between your tests and ours is that ours really aren't that hard. its just the basics of each subject and most of it is just reading the material in the test. your last year of the test is you junior year so that if you dont pass them, you have another year to make it up without being hurt by it. so your a senior then you graduate. then you can go to college and there are so many kinds to choose from its insane!!! 2 year, 4 year, community college, and then there are the ivey league schools which i guess would be the equivalent of like oxford or cambridge.
i wish we wore uniforms like yours. i think they are cool. i used to go to private school and we wore uniforms but they were TERRIBLE!!!!! pleated blue skirt, white button down top, and a plaid checkered red vest.
so yeah, some people stress out over the tests but there really is no reason to cause they really are EASY
