# About me

I used to live in the place where dreams come true. Walt Disney World.

When I left, I left a piece of me there, but the Magic still lives with me and within me, every day of my life.

I'm generally easygoing, friendly, and energetic, but I can be terrible when I get upset.

I'm complex in many ways, so I'm not going to try and pin myself down here. It can't be done so simply.

I saw RENT in Madison a few years ago.

And that's a long list....
Avenue Q, Beauty and the Beast (the broadway version has a bunch of awesome songs. Look up "Me" in particular), Hairspray, Mamma Mia!, Spamalot, My Fair Lady, Oliver!, Phantom of the Opera, Spring Awakening, Sweeney Todd, and Wicked. And those are just the soundtracks I have. I'm also reading Les Miserables right now.

And you?

Awesome!

See, I don't know how I feel about Spring Awakening right now. It's coming in December (I doubt I'd get to see it anyway but). My cousin introduced me to it with "Totally Fucked" two years ago and I loved that song, My Junk, and Word of Your Body. I rented the Soundtrack from the library and the only new songs from it that I encountered and loved were Don't Do Sadness, Bitch of Living, and Left Behind. However, a lot of them I hated. Like Song of Purple Summer (I figure I'm not a fan of Ilsa, I guess), Mama Who Bore Me...But the more I listen to it the more I like it.

Although I've never seen them, I like Avenue Q, Spamalot and Jersey Boys (I'm a huge Frankie Valli fan. I'm listening to him right now). But I've seen POTO twice on stage and tons of the movie, Sweeney Todd (the stage version disappointed me tech wise), Little Shop of Horrors, Musical TV shows (Buffy's Once More With Feeling, Scrub's My Musical, etc).

I love the Wicked soundtrack and I'm ecstatic that I get to see it in October.

I got into Spring Awakening because I saw a song performed on the Tony's along with winning several awards... I'd loved the music and added it to the list of several soundtracks I'd be interested in that I provided for the several family gift exchanges I had. I got it, and I really liked the music, though the story wasn't that captivating at first, mostly because I couldn't glean the whole thing from the songs. Then a friend lent me the published script that she bought at a bookstore, and after I read it I realized how fantastic it really was. It's not so much the story (which is still very good, imo) but also just how complex the stagecraft is. It's limited players, and the transitions from old time Germany to rock- themed songs, and the reasons behind that, that really got me. If you haven't read the script yet, I personally recommend you reserve total judgement until you have.

I've seen Wicked twice, and I'm planning to go see it a third time later this year. You'll love the play soooooo much ^_^

And if musical TV shows are your thing, PLEASE tell me you've seen Doctor Horrible's Sing Along Blog?

I think that's sort of the odd thing for me, that it is set in 1800s Germany but discusses things that wouldn't be around and tries to relate to things today. And sometimes scripts just don't give you enough, after all plays are meant to be performed. But I'll still be a fence sitter til I see it in action.

Oh lucky, this is my first time. I usually don't get to see plays, I just get the soundtracks and do my research and try to envision how it turns out. I'm SOOO excited for RENT tomorrow, though!

Oh YES I have! (How could I leave that out?) Neil Patrick Harris is so fabulous. I have photos of mine named after some of the lyrics, actually. And I think "On the Rise" is my favorite song. Part of it is in my deviantart signature.

What do you mean, discussing things that wouldn't be around then? I'm confused at what you mean.

You'll have to let me know how RENT went!

On the Rise? My Eyes? Hahaha, I got the soundtrack from iTunes. And so it is ^_^ I love Doctor Horrible.

Like stereos they mention one in My Junk. I don't think it would be there in that time period.

It's tonight! I'm so excited!
But I'll definitely let you know how it goes. With Adam and Anthony I'm sure it will be brilliant.

Perhaps. I got mine from a friend. Oh! And I can't believe I left Rocky Horror out of my favorites.

KeeperoftheRealms In reply to Xandi5anders [2009-06-10 04:28:04 +0000 UTC]

Hahaha! I forgot Rocky Horror too!

The reason behind the stereo and such is because although the story is set in an older time period, they used the rock music and modern references to accomplish connections with the audience. They wanted to make sure that the music could capture a contemporary audience's attention, that audience could relate to the music and the references and messages therein, and that the musical would have a rock-like soundtrack that's more accessible to people, and would have better longevity than a stuffy period album. That's also why the actors dress in clothing appropriate to their times, but when the music starts they pull microphones and get flashing colored light shows.

I feel ashamed. My birthday party was Rocky Horror themed. How could I forget it?!

Hmm, see, I don't know how I feel about modernizing and jazzing things up just to make them cooler to the 'hip' 'ADD' kids of today. Like when rock bands try to make Jesus cooler. The man already would let you mooch off of him without expecting payback, keep you entertained, and always be there for you. He doesn't need to be 'jazzed' up. If Spring Awakening wanted a time period of the 1800s, then they could've stuck to it. If they wanted modern rock, they could've gone for it. Teenagers suffer many of the same problems as the characters do. However, their characters are more confined by a strict society, so I see why it needs to be in that era. BUT, they could keep the rock sound because it is rebellious and hardcore as the teenagers singing the parts. They didn't really need to modernize it, in my opinion.

KeeperoftheRealms In reply to Xandi5anders [2009-06-12 05:47:53 +0000 UTC]

I feel there's a difference. They're not trying to make it "cooler." I don't know how to put it any other way though... so I'm going with a reference that I'm pretty sure you'll know.

In 'A Knights Tale,' there are portions of the movie where modern songs are played in place of fitting period music. The reason behind this is NOT because they're trying to be funny or to make the middle ages more "cool" or "modern." The reason the director wanted it to be like that is because he knew that by putting an elaborate dance along with period music, the audience wouldn't understand the implications of it. For example, the first ball scene was an exciting, sexy dance. If you couple that with the slower, less advanced period music, the audience doesn't connect. The audience won't understand that "exciting, sexy" way that the people of the time would have felt about their music. So instead they changed the moves slightly, and adjusted the music to help the audience feel the way the people of the time would have felt about a certain piece.

I don't know about you, but replacing the music with slow period music in my head definitely makes the scene in question seem more unimportant, when it is, in reality, quite crucial.

I feel that is what is happening with Spring Awakening. They adjust it to make the emotional connection they want the audience to have with the show, which, at the bottom line, is the most important part. It's not there to make it more "cool" or "popular..." It's just an attempt at speaking the language.

Actually, I've never seen A Knight's Tale. However, I think I see your point. Rather than making it 'relateable' per se, it's become understandable. It's conveying the emotion, rather than trying to be modern or period. Because that aspect doesn't matter, it's about the feeling it's supposed to give the audience.
