How do you do your armatures?

LadyNightLight In reply to LeighsDragons [2016-05-16 14:27:40 +0000 UTC]
Actually, most of my sculptures don't have any inner skeleton, and are generally made entirely from sculpey. There have been a few instances when iv'e use really scrunched up tinfoil as an internal skeleton, and sculpted around that, but I've found that causes the sculpey to burn in under 3 minutes of cooking. If I had to employ an armature though, I would use thick jewellery wire. I'm currently working on a rather large Haku dragon and I find that supports the twisty pose fantastically.
For all of the sculptures in my gallery thus far though, there's been no skeletons. If I needed them to defy gravity a little bit, I would actually use scrunched up tinfoil fashioned into leaning poles to support them while being sculpted so they don't fall over( kind of like giving them little walking sticks) and it also keeps them supported while they cook, and then I would remove the foil when they're done. Make sure to be careful doing that though, as the heat radiated by the foil in the oven can cause the points where it touches the sculpture to burn if you're not super attentive.

Your clay burns? Huh, I've never had that problem. I always use a tin foil skeleton for my guys and wire for larger sculptures (which I'm currently working on ). That's upsetting that your stuff burns

And I gotta say, when you make someone a Smaug sculpture, and it burns in the oven, and you take him out of the oven in a cloud of smoke, it's a pretty cool experience XD
Sometimes it's nice to purposefully let them char a bit, when I make a silver dragon, I sometimes leave it in the oven just a wee bit longer as when the silver chars it turns a lovely dusky rose colour

ooo that isΒ interesting! I've started using super sculpy so I paint everything lol I just love the consistence of SS better than the colored clay. Granted, I used to use a lamp that got so hot that it melted itself (it was metal too), so it would heat up the clay to the point where it was sticky and unusable. That's why I switched in the first place. But now I have a new lamp! I'll have to give it a try!

Ah it's not often that it burns, just we have a dodgy oven so it's difficult to predict the temperature. When it happens, I just paint over it with some acrylic
