Usually I find my rhythm to find my melody, sometimes I’ll just loop a rhythm and kinda hum out what might sound good. It’s also useful to know what key you’re in to make things easier.

Usually I just hum to get a rough idea of how each note might be played, and the tempo. It’s really helpful to have a keyboard to dabble with that kind of thing.
