But yeah, to best answer your question of what a haiku actually IS, I would consult wikipedia.com (I am absolutely HORRIBLE at describing things I know a lot about)
But for a short version, NOWADAYS its basically a three lined poem that has the first and third line having 5 syllables, while the second like has 7 syllables. You could also have a free form haiku though that doesn't follow this rule. It's complicated (which is why I recommend wikipedia.com).
