He works on a personal learning project of making his own graphics engine, so he appreciates artists who kick butt at efficient art.

deviantArt isn't the place to look for effective growth. it's good for publicity and reasserting shared worldviews, but little else sadly. And fan art(ists).
If you really want to grow, I suggest places like CGHUB, CGtalk, conceptart.org, Awesome Horse, etc. Little praise is given, lots of "this piece sucks, do this better"

thanks checking em out right now oh! if i may ask which one wud u say is better in terms of growing as an artist?? drawing from references e.g-looking at a pic of superman in a particular position and drawing it, or drawing it by memory and commonsense??
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
PandaProduction In reply to zankos [2012-07-03 05:17:01 +0000 UTC]
Both.
I'd argue the idea of "common sense" not being common, but I'm going to assume you mean by intuition, which is something else entirely.
It's gonna be both. Do as much as you can from both. The reference thing will train your memory if anything. As a beginner, do as much reference as you can.
I'm still crap. Bus rides to work, I do quick sketches from reference from the Sartorialist to do costumed figures. I also do the "ink blot," blindly creating a light scribble, and then massaging those lines into something concrete.
Do both as much as you can, and reference when appropriate. If there's a humanoid, there's usually a reference, or several pieces of reference bits.
And keep a sketchbook and draw in it as much as you can, if you don't already.

I doubt it's constructive.
It's just kinda disappointing to see Ctrlpaint resort to DA for this sorta group. It's not a clear environment to grow in. You tend to get more praise and less useful critiques.

Yeah, you might be right. But for me, the one thing helps me to improve and the other to go on.

Reminder that I'm basically using DA as an art dump. Spend most tome frequenting CGHUB, etc.

PandaProduction In reply to StarryEyesGirl [2010-08-17 23:20:18 +0000 UTC]
Faust gave his soul to the Devil in return for superior knowledge, power etc, but when it came time to pay up, he lamented for a while. There was an actual guy named faust, but the previous Story about him is a play.
So...that's how it's related to Faust.
