What I did to improve was:
I started out copying photos from a blank canvas. I did that a lot. I also learnt anatomy by going to life drawing sessions and copying from anatomy books. Then I supplemented the above by drawing stuff from real life. My journey is pretty much chronicled here on my DA gallery since I posted a lot of these studies sans the traditional stuff.
