# About me
I am a photographer, programmer, engineer, writer, and all around nerd. I do some photo-manipulation, but not a whole lot. I'm just starting to learn how to draw. Wish me luck
I was born in a semi-rural area south of Detroit. Since we found ourselves going to some of the nicer parts of Michigan whenever we could, we decided to move up to the Cadillac area. I can't imagine ever moving back to the city.
We live on a small ten acre parcel about a quarter mile from the Manistee National Forest. We share our house with our furred friends, and our property with various wild and domesticated animals.
I love water, the great outdoors, and technology. Trying to integrate all of that together is an interesting challenge.

My macro lens is a relatively recent purchase. I love using it. The problem in the UK is finding something that is colourful enough to create photographic interest. Apart from wasps, butterflies and ladybirds, just about everything is brown and boring. That doesn't stop the creatures being interesting in their own right but they are just not photogenic. The macro world of nature is something most people walk by without seeing, which is a shame

Bugs on flowers usually works well. I found a bright red (probably toxic) bug on an ox eye daisy. Also, crab spiders like to hide on flowers and snack on the pollinating insects. I need to look for some more this spring, since I'm not really satisfied with the ones I have.
I'm also going to look for some monarch chrysalises and take a picture every day to monitor it as the skin becomes clearer and clearer. The caterpillars are interesting, too.
There are some tiny flowers that are not very noticeable normally, but are really quite striking when magnified. I have a picture of a fall maple leaf that I backlit so that I could get a detail of the vein pattern. Some common house spiders look really creepy when magnified. The vein detail on some flower petals is intricate. The stamens and pistols are a little challenging to get in focus, but at least they don't move. I have a nice shot of the middle of a trillium with yellow pollen on the petals. I picked up some praying mantises and put them on different colored flowers. The compound eye is really interesting because the lens that you are directly over is black.
Another fun thing to do is to go to a botanical garden and go wild.
Now, I'm really looking forward to spring. There are some really beautiful wildflowers near the public access points for the Pine River, and some bloodroot flowers just on the other side of the road from our driveway.
