OtGW is wonderful! I haven't done fanart for it lately, but I hope to again at some point in the future. It's a bit hard to get into the mood for it considering it's not the season. MHA/BnHA is my current addiction and I've got plenty of fanart planned, along with some original art.

Thank you so much for the watch and I hope you continue to enjoy my art!

Lengurkur In reply to SagePrincess97 [2019-05-01 01:18:13 +0000 UTC]

It is such a good series! I've been really struggling to pace myself with it since I only became a fan within the past seven or eight months. (I began doing fanart for it only a month ago now, though.) I don't want to be caught up because that means suffering the wait. I've been dragging out season three for a long time now, and I think I have about five episodes left. I also haven't yet read beyond volume 17 of the manga since that's all the public library here has. Some days I debate whether or not I should catch up on the anime and/or read scans of the manga, but either way, that'd just mean more waiting.

Fan characters are so fun! It's super easy to come up with ones for MHA/BnHA. The funny thing is, I’ve never really been into making fan characters, but the fan characters I came up with spontaneously came to me. I hope to draw them at some point, but the list of canon characters I want to draw is so long so I'm not sure when I'll get around to drawing fan characters.

Whoops, I rambled on a bit there. Sorry about that!

SagePrincess97 In reply to Lengurkur [2019-05-01 01:26:33 +0000 UTC]

I've been dragging out Season 3 as well but it's only because I go to uni (which is stressful). I've been a fan of MHA/BNHA since November of last year (so basically not that long; just recent). I should be reading the manga, haha. I'll admit I don't read much manga and tend to watch anime versions more often.
I've seen all sorts of fan characters and I agree, super fun to make. I've never been this passionate for an anime like MHA/BNHA. Really glad I got into it, even though it may be seen as jumping on the bandwagon a little too late.
Hey, I ramble a lot so you're in good company!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Lengurkur In reply to SagePrincess97 [2019-05-01 02:03:20 +0000 UTC]

Good luck with uni! That definitely does seem like it’d be stressful. I tend to read more manga than watch anime, but it seems like a lot of people watch more anime than read manga, so I can get where you’re coming from. As much as I love the MHA/BnHA manga, I will say that the anime is one of those rare anime series that goes above and beyond the manga. By just watching the anime, you aren’t missing out on anything, so reading the manga is something I feel isn't as important as it would be for a lot of other series. In fact, the anime has a couple of scenes that aren’t in the manga whatsoever, and they flesh out the characters a bit more. I suppose you can call them filler, but they don’t feel like it based on how they give development to the characters rather than existing to drag something out like typical filler.
They are! People can get really creative with their fan characters. It’s been quite a while since I’ve been this passionate about an anime/manga series. I’ve definitely loved many before, but the list of things I want to draw for this series alone already exceeds the amount of things I’ve drawn for other anime/manga series I’m a fan of.
Haha, good to know I’m not scaring you away with my rambling.

Thank you, I shall get through my semester.~ Yeah, I'm not much of a book person; I tend to gravitate towards animation for action scenes coming to life. Even so, I should read the manga although the anime has gone through every scene that has happened in the manga so far. I still go by my thoughts that I tend to go by anime canon/verse, though.
I really appreciate MHA/BNHA for bringing out the passionate side of me. A lot of people say it's a typical shonen anime (and I can see why they think so even though I disagree with that notion) but for me, it feels fresh and inspiring. Maybe it's just my love for superheroes and superpowers talking but I really like the whole world of MHA/BNHA. I personally think MHA/BNHA is an awesome anime and is executed near flawlessly.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Lengurkur In reply to SagePrincess97 [2019-05-01 09:09:02 +0000 UTC]

I can understand that, and I love seeing the scenes from the manga come to life in animation. I always have to wonder how close the animators get the action scenes to how the mangaka pictured them in their head as they were illustrating the manga. A lot of my drawings change quite a bit between the mental image I initially had for them and the final product, so it really makes me curious about what those sorts of changes would be like on larger scale.
I feel the same way! Although MHA/BnHA does have a lot of typical shonen anime tropes, it does a really good job of taking those tropes and giving a bit of an unexpected/fresher twist to them. The characters are what really drives that, I feel. Izuku isn’t the typical vengeful and/or angsty protagonist, and although he can be considered overpowered, it isn’t done in an annoying way. Then there’s Bakugo, whose development didn’t go the whole stereotypical betrayal/join the enemy route like most rivals to the protagonist would. I could go on, but there’s no point in me rambling about things like that. MHA/BnHA is simply so well done.

SagePrincess97 In reply to Lengurkur [2019-05-01 15:36:27 +0000 UTC]

That's exactly how I feel about MHA/BNHA; tropey but I'm a sucker for tropes and they're done in fresh ways and it only adds on to my love for the franchise. This is the first anime where I thoroughly enjoy every character. No other anime has given me the same feeling for other characters like MHA/BNHA. It is so executed well and I wish people could not dismiss it as another shonen anime. I mean, people can like whatever they want but I wish they weren't so close-minded about things and views.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Lengurkur In reply to SagePrincess97 [2019-05-01 18:03:41 +0000 UTC]

All of your thoughts are exactly how I feel about the series as well, and I wish that people wouldn't be so quick to judge it. I ended up putting it off for quite a while since I was tired of the same dry shonen tropes, and have never really been able to get into any major shonen series since I felt like they drag out, end up having too many cliches, or the characters aren't ones I can get invested in. I'm really glad I finally decided to check out MHA/BnHA since it ended up being so much better than I was expecting. I feel like a lot of people who label it as an average shonen series either don't even start it at all or are too caught up in their preconceptions to pay attention to the actual story and details when they do watch/read it. Of course, they're entitled to their opinions, but just from my own experience, I feel like there are a lot of people out there who only see the hype and stay away from the series because of that rather than giving it a genuine chance. And not everyone can like the same things anyway. The world would be pretty boring if that were the case.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

SagePrincess97 In reply to Lengurkur [2019-05-01 19:38:36 +0000 UTC]

I don't usually watch shonen anime (heck, I'm a casual anime fan so I'm rather selective with what I watch), with DBZ and MHA/BNHA being the exceptions. I didn't get too much exposure for the latter because I was oblivious to its attraction when the anime first aired. I don't tend to find anything anything specific with anime; only criterion it holds is keeping me interested. Regarding the hype for MHA/BNHA, I don't think it's overhyped at all; I fully think it deserves its hype because it is a good anime series (for me, personally). People who let hype dictate their opinions need to have a seat and think about how close-minded that view is. Don't form opinions unless you give it a chance.

Lengurkur In reply to SagePrincess97 [2019-05-01 19:53:31 +0000 UTC]

My tastes in anime/manga vary quite a bit as well, but the only ones I'm going to keep following, regardless of the genre, are ones that keep me hooked. I agree that people shouldn't judge a series (or anything, for that matter) before giving it a chance. I was quite indifferent to MHA/BnHA before trying it out, but I put off starting it due to past experiences with other popular shonen series and was afraid I'd end up disappointed. I've had people tell me in the past that certain popular series are unique and well done only for them to have a lot of common, uninteresting tropes and poor writing. Going into things open-minded is definitely best, but it can be a major let-down if you're expecting something to live up to the hype but it doesn't. On the other hand, it can be a huge reward when it does. I know there are people out there who hate on a series without trying it first or without really knowing anything about it simply because of its popularity, and that's where things just get ridiculous.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

SagePrincess97 In reply to Lengurkur [2019-05-01 21:46:51 +0000 UTC]

I wasn't indifferent towards MHA/BNHA... I was more oblivious to it? For a lack of a better description. I knew people who were so into MHA/BNHA long before I joined the bandwagon and I only saw a snippet of it when it first aired. I held off from it for so long purely because of that reason. I'm pretty airheaded when it comes to new franchises. One would think I would've loved it but I ironically didn't get into it until a couple years after its debut. As far as general tastes go, I don't mind if things get too tropey (it's because I have an open mind on things generally speaking) but if things can't keep me interested, then I'll drop it. Also, I hate it when people say they hate something because they think it's overrated/too popular. And I really hate the term "overrated". It feels childish to say it.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Lengurkur In reply to SagePrincess97 [2019-05-02 18:08:03 +0000 UTC]

That makes sense. I suppose I was oblivious to it for about a year or so after it began, but after that, I ended up hearing about it more from a friend of mine who got into it. She kept telling me how good it was, but I still ended up putting it off for months after she discovered it. I feel a bit guilty about that since she kept wanting to discuss her favorite characters and theories, but at least now we talk about it all the time. In fact, last night I came up with an AU and we had a lengthy discussion fleshing it out. If things tend to have too many tropes that are executed in a cliche way, it will sometimes bug me, but my interest in sticking with something always comes down to how well it’s executed and if the story keeps me interested. It does seem very childish when people just hate on something solely because of popularity. It’s like they want to feel better or more unique than everyone who is a fan of said popular thing, whereas, in reality, they’re just being immature.

I got into MHA/BNHA because 1. after it was released, I did want to watch it, 2. I have friends who like it and I was partially influenced, and 3. most importantly, it was my boyfriend who influenced me to get into it. I wish I got into the anime earlier but what can be done? I'm just glad I fell into it when I was given the chance to. Ever since then, I've made fan characters and Canon x OC/FC ships. I also have a few AU ideas.
It's understandable. For a lot of people, too much of the same thing can be tiring and boring. I don't really pay attention to that kind of stuff; I'm pretty lax.
Yeah, I swear people think they're cool for disliking things we like. We're all entitled to our own opinions but don't go shoving them down our throats. It's immature.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Lengurkur In reply to SagePrincess97 [2019-05-03 04:23:48 +0000 UTC]

I also wish I could have gotten into the series earlier, but it is what it is. Although it can be a bit of a bummer to become a fan of something partway through it or after it's over, at least then you have the perk of binging things then rather than waiting for each installment. I remember that I had gotten into the Noragami manga only to find out it'd been on hiatus a year due to the mangaka's health. My timing happened to be perfect, though, because it was quite literally the very next week that the series came off of hiatus. It's situations like that where being a latecomer to the fandom isn't so bad.

I feel like I used to be far laxer when I was younger, but for some reason, as I've gotten older, I've become a bit pickier with what I enjoy. I suppose it's because I don't have as much time as I used to and have to be a bit stricter on myself with what I spend my time invested in. If it's something that doesn't tend to bring new things to the table or do them in a more unpredictable way, even if it's interesting, it might end up being something I have to cut back on.

I agree that it's some sort of fad to dislike stuff. I think it's great when people have opinions and hearing a genuine debate about something can really open your eyes to aspects about it that you've never thought of, but just trying to force someone to agree with you or make feel lesser is shallow.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

SagePrincess97 In reply to Lengurkur [2019-05-03 17:05:35 +0000 UTC]

That is true. Sometimes being late to the bandwagon has its upsides. I know I'm absolutely okay with jumping on the MHA/BNHA bandwagon a little late.
That totally makes sense. I don't really get picky with what needs to be on franchises. I can't seem to know why that is but I'm just pretty chill about it. The only things I get aggravated with in regards to fandoms are the discourse and harsh criticism. Discourse and harsh criticism drive me up the wall and it feels like I shouldn't watch stuff because of them. I'm not saying people can't criticize but I feel like people blow their criticisms out of proportion sometimes. Fine if people don't like stuff after trying it or it's fine to criticize aspects within the franchise but the moment criticisms become nitpicks or are blown out of proportion, it's hard to take them seriously. I feel like people should chill with the opinions and just accept that not everyone is going to like the same things. It'd be really boring if it was the case.

Lengurkur In reply to SagePrincess97 [2019-05-07 02:29:40 +0000 UTC]

Busy weekend. Sorry for the delayed reply.

I think it's good to be pretty chill. You don't have to stress as much about debating if something is going to be worth your time since you just end up enjoying it regardless.

When people rant about something and nitpick incredibly minor things, it seems like they only want to start drama. I’ll admit that I’ve sometimes gone on a rant and made some harsh criticism, but only amongst really close friends. I’m much too nervous to actually vocalize anything like that more publically. I don't want to seem like I'm doing it to cause some argument or hate on people's opinions since that isn't my intention. I'm really non-confrontational, so whenever something like that happens, it's more like I get too emotional about something and have to vent. When I calm down I always end up realizing how dumb it was for me to rant about whatever it was in the first place anyway. I'm glad that it rarely happens, but I do have to say that I occasionally do it.

You're fine. I get busy at times so I understand.
That's the feeling I get in most of these situations. I mean it's okay to be critical of things so long as opinions aren't being bashed. The only time when things really become irrational is when you come with the mindset that you're right and everyone else is wrong. It's a disgustingly dismissive attitude. Unfortunately, I've seen some crits where they carry this very same mindset and it's harrowing. Chances are when one holds this mindset, they are bound for backlash. Everything does have its flaws and some things have merits to be criticized for but the moment one takes the "I'm right, you're wrong" mentality, it's really hard for the person to be taken seriously. Just chill out and criticize in a more rational way so that people can understand where you're coming from why you're criticizing it. Not saying it's you in specific, just a general "you" if you catch my meaning.

Oh yeah, once people start to act like their opinion is fact, then it just gets ridiculous. This is reminding me that I remember reading or hearing somewhere about how in OtGW, Patrick McHale intentionally left flaws and incomplete ideas/plot threads in the mini-series, with the black turtles being most notable. I'm pretty sure I recall the reason behind that being because of how in the past (no idea how far in the past this was a thing) stories were intentionally made imperfect to reflect how humans aren't flawless. It was something like that, but I'm not entirely sure how well I'm remembering, so don't quote me on any of that. I find it interesting how flaws in a story aren't necessarily a bad thing.

To be honest, if a story was perfect, I think it'd be boring. No story I have ever read or watched fell into the "perfect" category. I think flaws can be interesting to talk about. Flaws don't necessarily make stories bad. It just leads us to ask more questions and bring up curiosity.

Lengurkur In reply to SagePrincess97 [2019-05-09 17:04:01 +0000 UTC]

Oh, yeah I agree. Flaws make things pretty interesting. I just find it fascinating how flaws are sometimes intentionally put into something, rather than just relying on inevitable flaws that may arise since there really isn't a way to make a story "perfect" in all aspects. Flaws definitely do make you think on things more.
