The Great JAFAX Move of 2015
As most of you already know, JAFAX wonβt be hosted at Grand Valley State Universityβs campus anymore. We literally became too hot to handle. Instead, we will be moving to downtown Grand Rapids.
There are several upsides to this! Firstly, a more legitimate convention center setting, although less picturesque, allows for us to extend our dates and hours. Thereβs a very good chance JAFAX will become a three-day event! Weβll open earlier and close later, and be able to hold overnight programming.
Also, JAFAX will be able to continue to grow in size while not being spread out over several buildings. Thereβs enough walking at cons without having to get lost between the Artist Alley and Video Game Room!
Thirdly, this allows JAFAX to be more convenient for out-of-town attendees. Being located in the downtown area of a major city exponentially increases the number of available hotels, all within walking distance of the convention! Weβre also currently in talks with the nearby hotels and restaurants to offer special discounts that weekend.
Sadly, itβs not all upsides. Having to make this change last minute means we were unable to get convention space for our traditional dates this year. Currently, we are planning on July 31st to August 2nd. We are very sorry for all those that are inconvenienced by the switch. No one is as bummed about this as we are! Starting 2016 though, weβll be back to our normal dates.
Lastly, all this change means a lot more cost for us. And, as our search for a millionaire benefactor has yet to show positive results, we are sorry to say that JAFAX will no longer be a free event. HOWEVER! We guarantee that we will still be the least expensive and most affordable anime convention in the state, if not the entire Midwest. We havenβt lost sight of our roots, and are squeezing every penny to pass the savings on to our beloved attendees. Expect pre-registration rates to be $25-30, available early next year. We will also do our best to allow for reduced/free admittance to children, elderly, special needs, and everyone else we can. And every dime we get is going to be put back into the event, making it better than ever! Our motto is and will always be βAnime for all!β
That nearly covers the new news we can disclose at this time. If you have any questions, please ask! We canβt guarantee we can answer fully just yet, but weβll certainly try. We hope to see all of you next year!
