Did you know that Ku is one of the four principal Hawaiian tiki gods?! - Pastes. -
"Ku β Ancient Tiki God of War
In Hawaiian mythology Ku is one of the four great gods along with the ancient tiki gods, Kanaloa, Kane, and Lono. He was the husband of the goddess Hina (Beckwith 1970:12), suggesting a complementary dualism as the word ku in the Hawaiian language means "standing up" while one meaning of 'hina' is 'fallen down.'
Ku is worshipped under many names, including Ku-ka-ili-moku, the "Seizer of Land" (a feather-god, the guardian of Kamehameha). Rituals included human sacrifice, which was not part of the worship of the other gods. Ku, Kane, and Lono caused light to shine in upon the world. They are uncreated gods who have existed from eternity (Tregear 1891:540)."
Isn't that cool?! I saw this and HAD to share it with you. The fact that he's the guardian of Kamehameha amuses me like you don't even know. This would almost make an awesome reference for a plot in future RPs. xD!

That is just... I don't even have words to describe how awesome that is. The guardian of Kamehameha -really- grabbed me. It's like "dude wtf what are the odds."
Even his name is pretty significant to the character. "ku in the Hawaiian language means "standing up"... because he never backs down and he's always ready to pull himself (and others) out of the dirt and back to their feet. I -loved- that part. It was so subtle but it matched him perfectly.
Do you think Akira Toriyama knew all this when he made the canon Goku character?

It would be remarkable if Akira was able to come up with the name without knowing of this. But then again, he created Vegeta, so.
There's an entire history behind Hawaii and Kamehameha. You should look it up sometime. Kamehameha was a king, and he established the House of Kamehameha. There's King Kamehameha I, II, III, etc. There are many things named after him, too. Even the US navy named a submarine after him, the USS Kamehameha.
I don't know if Akira was inspired by it or not, but the history behind all of that is extremely interesting. And what's best is that Ku is a part of it. XD! I really can't stop seeing the character as a tiki god now. He's a deity and doesn't even know it.
