I do try to have a variety, to keep things interesting.

You might try doing a bit of work on your shading, like the Mermaid - if you inverted the shading it would look closer to the way real objects are shaded.
And if your not familiar with using gradients, you'd be surprised how quickly you could do a character's shading with them!
Although, while waves & rocks can be difficult to get right, gradients & texture usage can ease the task - just keep in mind the direction from where your light sources are coming from in a scene.
If you'd like, I could enhance your Mermaid a bit - so you could see kind of what I mean?

You might also try some of the Normal Mapping Apps like crazybump, after I did some fixing up - I used it on your Mermaid with the last 2 renders - as you can see it does a pretty good job of fixing most small shading errors, of which I made a few too but with results like these who cares!
Mermaid Prep & Renders So, with very simple shading and crazybump - you can also learn how to shade better by example, and if you want to move the light just right click in the 3d preview and move the mouse!
If you like the results, you are free to do as you wish with them - but I'd like to fav & post them myself if that's okay with you?

see what crazybump can do, and hopefully learn
a bit more about shading and what to expect!
