Truly impressive work, Sir!
Hoping to see a flight of SE5a's mixing it up with The Circus at some point.
If I could add 2 and 2 and NOT get "Blue Square" I would be a Viper Driver,
probably switching over to Raptors now . . .

Hi mate, Thank you for the link to your model. I did download it, and I've gone over it. The issues you are facing are as I suspected, caused by too much geometry.
You are using too many segments, iterations(?) on your curves, and the program cannot cope, so it starts misbehaving.
I understand why, you're doing it. I't looks very nice with super smooth surfaces, but trust me on this, it's not needed.
I have done this mistake many, many times myself
Do I remember correctly that you want to become a daz trader?
I do too as a matter of fact. Seems a couple of daz users have taken a liking to my models, and I figure if they like it, others might as well.
Sketchup however, appears not very well suited for the task. It has mainly to do with it being based on triangles rather than quad polygons.
There are however, some possible ways around it, with quad tool plugins etc. Anyway I will make a serious attempt at some new models to see if it can't be done anyway.
anything I learn along the way I'll be happy to share!
Joachim

Hello, Mr.Joachim,
hope things are quiet in your part of Europe, considering the recent
madness that has transpired. Politicians make choices motivated by
partisanship and innocent people pay the price with their blood.
As for the models, my plan is to create a base model with as many
quad-based polygons as possible. Once the base SketchUp model
is complete, it will be exported to Maya to remap the geometry and
UV Map unfolding for its "paint job". If I build as many polygons as
possible as quads, the Maya translation will be less difficult.
The problem in this case is the cross-section at the top of the vertical
stabilizer. I am unable to find the angle needed to close up the form.
As it is proportionately smaller and angled to the rear, one line will
not match with the others.
Also, some models will be sent over to SolidWorks for manufacturer's
details - screws, bolts, standardized parts - for prop building on CNC
and 3D Prototyping. I spent several days trying to figure it out.
Ideally, I would like to build a full-scale model of the rifles. I am in the
process of building a Hero Model of the Gladius at present. Building
all the main components as though it was real manufacture. This will
include the upper receiver, lower receiver, forearm, barrel group, the
optical sight and magazine . . . and a few cartridges of ammunition.
Building the parts from urethane foam and 3D builds will allow me to
paint each part and fit them together properly.
Right now I am building a scale model of my starship in SolidWorks
with the intent of sending it to the school's 3D Prototyper. It will be
fairly simple in detail, as the USS Valley Forge is 350m in length and
the scale model will be 15cm. 1:2275 is quite small . . . the smallest
size model I built was 1:72 scale when younger.
If that proves successful, I will make certain you see the photos.

The simplest method I could think of is take screenshots while
doing your example work. With a series of images you can add
notations - "Here I did this", "I found this works", "This is where
it can be tricky", etc, in both the description box and the images
themselves.
I take progress "photos" of my model building, so I can show
others through email.
It may be the most convenient way should you chose to do it.
Thank you for your time

Outstanding technical designs, Sir!
Skillful use of SketchUp, makes for equal parts practical SciFi and
adventurous Space Opera! Perhaps consider a tutorial on how you
create complex and compound curves, Sir? I still need to figure that
out and still keep four-point quads to make export to Maya easier.
Looking forward to seeing more of your work.

Scifiwarships In reply to TheLongChase [2015-09-02 06:43:59 +0000 UTC]
Why thank you very much!
I just might do that.
The "keep four point quads" part might get a little tricky sometimes as it doesn't seem to mind SU much to have more points in a poly.
It does cost a little money, but have you considered buying the Artisan plugin? It's a smoothing plugin for SU, and (quite frankly) it is shit..
I rarely use it for what it's intended, as I find that with practice I can make much better smooth curves with the basic tools in the program.
At leas with the kind of modelling that I do..
However it(Artisan) does have a nifty little feature. You cannot use it if your model has one or more polys with more than four points.
With a bit of trickery you can then use it to sniff out the culprit, correct it and export your model flawlessly to Maya. Or so the theory goes...

I am trying my best to keep four-points with my builds.
Also struggling in school to get SU to actually export a model
in OBJ format to remap and prep the UV Skin in Maya. Always
get an OBJ/MTL file reading 0kb.
Thinking it might be an issue with the school's licensing. No
money to buy the software, now that it just jumped 20%

I worked out a coupon deal, at least, Sir. Two of the SU
Admin reps are sympathetic and being very helpful in my
purchase.
The student version was recommended by forum members,
but I need to be able to build models for potential commercial
work. That means export to Maya, SolidWorks, ZBrush, etc.
Of course you know, building starships, aircraft, weapons,
equipment for portfolio and the market has requirements
with logistics. I am hoping to make stuff for the Poser/DAZ
3D Studio, that means the commercial version.
If Maya was not so anti-intuitive and awkward with how
you build geometry . . .
Considering how positive the interaction with SU reps has
been; not bad ultimately. What proves far worse is adobe
arbitrarily choosing to go subscription only for their software
without allowing customer choice.
This will only increase piracy, in some cases out of spite.
I would have NO idea about that . . . my name is Jon Snow.
Thank you for the encouragement, Sir. Looking forward to

Thank you for the complements, Sir!
I am just finishing up the semester; working on a more completed and
detailed ZBrush sculpt of the Hero's head from what you saw on that
Flickr! album.
Is there a time limit for this Mars Aero Grand Prix? I have some ideas
for an aerodyne racer and would be able to start up design and build
in the next two weeks, I think.
The UV35E Dakota is a tilt-rotor I am basing on the V22 Osprey and
Bell Helicopter V280 Valor prototype. It serves both as a troop carrier
and Close Air Support aircraft with rockets, missiles and cannon. This
is the role the aircraft of the 160th SOAR - Special Operations Aviation
Regiment - as seen in the film Blackhawk Down. Since The Battle of
Mogadishu in October 1993, they have armed their MH60M Blackhawk
helicopters with more offensive weapons.
In the fiction I am writing, tilt-rotors serve as the backbone of the
United States Army airlift operations. They have greater range and
higher cruising speed over helicopters, so in one hundred years, the
Osprey is referred to as a "Legacy" system all Air Assault operations
are built around.
Ultimately, this will be a true hero model, as I will build the interior of
the cabin, flight deck and boarding ramp; landing gear and weapon
stations as well. The nose of the Dakota is proving a real challenge
to shape correctly, though.
The M12A4 rifle in color was an interim attempt at building compound
curves, but must be rebuilt completely, as that was built three years
back. The M12 will be more true to the revised drawings. The version
in white was the original awkward attempt, when I mistakenly thought
SketchUp worked as solid material, like with ZBrush.
Speaking of ZBrush, I do want to create a sculpt of my version of the
Thark John Carter killed to save Dejah Thoris, Princess of Helium.
Exporting both The Gladius and M12 to Maya should make for minimal
problems, as I made certain to keep the polygons as four-point quads.
From there, I intend to UV Map it and build proper 3D models of all
these designs.
Hoping to set up a little studio for the Poser/DAZ 3D Studio market. If
I can provide enough detail and quality, then I can sell it on Renderosity,
TurboSquid, et al.
Again, thank you for the encouragement, Sir.

No there's no time limit for the Martian Aero Racer Challenge. We hope to have it running for a long time. My model is going to take at least a couple of months to complete..
So please join the party, consider it another place to learn, and spread the knowledge you possess yourself.
Also this is only the first challenge, you see I FIRMLY believe that there are not enough scifi battlecruisers, mechas, race cars, fighters, space stations or steam punk aerial battleships in the world. There just aren't, and we can fix it.

Well, Sir, I do have the USS Valley Forge class Strike Cruiser, a
United States Navy starship within the series I am writing. She
employs centrifugal gravity sections, radiators and a Helium 3
fusion reactor. Weapons are primarily housed in the bow of the
ship, using a mix of rail guns, missiles, and laser based Directed
Energy Weapons.
At present, the design is mostly on paper, with only the general
template laid out in SketchUp.
The ZBrush work is going well, should be completed on time;
instructor really likes the WIP so far.
I do like the idea of a starship challenge, Sir, and I have ideas
for an aerodyne racer.
Thank you, again.

That sounds like an ideal candidate actually. This is exactly what we're hoping for.
Designers who have well developed concepts, and proper skills..
The idea with all of these challenges is to generate many more viewers and modellers together
for joint exposure and active learning.
Quite frankly I am sick and tired of spending countless hours building models that just get 200 pageviews a month..
So instead of trying to get anywhere alone we decided to join forces and have many build the same craft in wildly different ways
to generate more themed content of a higher quality than we would otherwise make on our own.
BTW, I'm Joachim and you don't have to call me Sir
Are you or were you in the United States armed forces by any chance?

TheLongChase In reply to Scifiwarships [2015-09-11 01:59:05 +0000 UTC]
I really cannot answer for "developed concepts
and proper skills", Mr.Joachim, yet I am at
least trying . . . I may even be able to bring
something worth your time to at least one of
the challenges you propose.
I served as an Infantryman in the United
States Army from 2000-2010. My photo from
overseas is on the "cover" of the "Assorted
Photoshop Work" folder. That was in 2006
when I served in the 101st Airborne. The
patch visible is of the 173d Airborne, my
previous combat unit.
Known formally as a Combat Patch for Prior
Service, this is one part of the US Army's
heraldric traditions. American Soldiers
wear their currently assigned unit on their
left sleeve, the unit they went to war with
previously on the right.
United States Marines only wear unit patches
on certain versions of their dress uniforms.
Should a man opt to remain with the unit upon
re-enlisting, wearing the same patch on both
sleeves is the norm. Yet transfers between
units within the Army is encouraged in the
interests of building mutual knowledge of
tactics and experience among the ranks.
As a Sergeant, I trained a lot of Soldiers
from non-direct combat units. The experience
and perspective helped them understand more
when compared to a person serving in the role
of "professional instructor".
Now I am trying to add computer skills to my
existing art degree. Any 3D model work I do
ultimately will serve as portfolio material,
even if it is for sale on Poser and DAZ.
Thank you, again

TheLongChase In reply to Scifiwarships [2015-09-12 02:25:52 +0000 UTC]
I was never a Drill Sergeant and no one in The States
cares about what I did when it comes to resumes.
I am in school only because I cannot get a job. That I
was an Infantryman has blacklisted me. While this is
discrimination and highly illegal, there is no way to
prove it.
The current presidential administration poisoned the
public's view of Veterans and the military at large
early on by saying we all have PTSD, are emotionally
unstable, violent, and are likely domestic terrorists.
Well . . . that is gratitude for you . . .
The movie industry for the past decade has made a
focused effort to push these ideas very hard: we are
depicted as war criminals, psychopaths, cowards, idiot
patsies, racists, unintelligent buffoons, thugs, etc.
Note how any movie that is positive is savaged by the
critics: Act of Valor and American Sniper were blasted
as jingoistic, racist violence-porn, propaganda, etc.
The partisan politics of the past ten years has made my
country near-unlivable for me. After I transitioned to the
National Guard in new york, I was nearly spat on while
in my uniform. Just out to get a sandwich when a "hipster"
college student started haranguing me. This happened
soon after obama got elected. All his arguments were the
same tired, prepackaged points being thrown around for
years. All devoid of fact, yet rich in vitriol.
He even called me "babykiller", and was confused when
I laughed at him. I asked this young fool if he knew what
year it was and had he any original insults to throw at me.
Or was he just his professor's brainless meat puppet? At
which point he cleared his sinuses to spit.
He only stopped when I pulled a knife on him, making it
very clear that would be the last act of his life if he did it.
I certainly would have . . . not a good feeling afterwards.
I let my enlistment run out after that, just not worth my
life and health anymore.
Yet I am fool enough to miss it dearly.
Everything I and men like me did overseas is for nothing,
now. Many of the places I walked, with the exception of
Kirkuk, have fallen to the enemy with hardly a fight. The
hard-won victory in iraq has been discarded out of political
malice; afghanistan will suffer the same fate. Men I knew
who are now gone had their sacrifice thrown away. This
administration has not only their blood, but the blood of
innocent men, women, and children who have been
massacred on camera on their hands.
All for partisan politics.
The enemy is being allowed to win. The enemy is being
allowed to invade Europe, Canada and The United States.
Innocent people will suffer, and needlessly; but I can do
nothing to stop it.
That disgusts me beyond words.
Apologies to be so dark in my answer, Mr.Joachim

Aw man that's a harsh reality to have to live with..
I am Norwegian. We live -literally- on the protected, insignificant fringes of the western world.
All of this is something I only read and hear about from people like yourself
whom I have met online, so I have very limited personal experience.
I spent one month in Beirut, Lebanon in 1997 as a student at the American University, but it doesn't qualify as an experience that gained me any deeper knowledge of the region.
It was a time of relative quiet when we were there, and I remember the city and country as a wonderful place. A couple of months after we went home, some Islamic hardliners set off a bomb on campus though. That was not fun.
I have also been in Chicago for 10 days in 1998, again that makes me only a tourist.
It's appears to be like the whole post Vietnam era all over again with estranged veterans and a general population who have turned hostile.
As if you're ex convicts and not ex soldiers.
Nobody ever learns anything from past wars, do they?
Back then the fight was against communism. This time around it's an ongoing war on terror that actually was about what? Oil? Islam? Payback for 9/11? The next election? Carte blance to control the population through surveillance? It never seems clear to me.
Standing from outside like I do, it seems very very unfair how you veterans are treated.
I can sympathize very much with the unfairness of having sacrificed so much only to see it all thrown away by people who:
Haven't fought for any of it,
Haven't lost or given away anything and who ultimately doesn't care.
As you say, in a word it's politics isn't it?
Priorities change and the people who have executed the last administration's will, are thrown on the dump by the next one, and f**k you very much for your sacrifice.
I can only speak for myself, but I have always supported the war in Afghanistan and, partially in Irak. I mean I was, like everyone else, angry when it came out that the Bush administration went to war on fake evidence of WMD's and unsurprised when it turned out to be oil and resources that was the real reason, or so we are currently being led to believe.
But ultimately I am for any war that wants to halt Islam. It is a brutal, oppressive, power hungry, antagonistic, dictatorial, female hating, medieval religion that should be heavily reformed or simply removed.
I bet that ungrateful hipster wouldn't have been so happy if his university had been under constant threat of being bombed by "right thinking IS militia" on account of it's heretic nature as a center for learning (other things than Islam). As a student he should have known that.
That is the reality much of the middle east faces every day, and US and Coalition troops are among the only thing standing in their way many places.
In my opinion, whatever the original reasons for war, liberation from Islamic oppression and a fight for democratic ideals is a just cause. And it's not just Islam. Any from of Ideology, political or religious that forces itself upon anyone at gunpoint should succumb to their own threat.
There's no need to apologize for the dark answer. Unfairness is NOT something that should be kept silent.

I see the notable progress on your Mars Aero Racer, Mr.Joachim,
certainly impressive!
I presume the flight instrumentation is presented through the
pilot's helmet displays? Similar to the developments with NATO
and American flight crews?
As for your escape system, instead of an ejection seat, what if
the cockpit separates into an escape pod? I could imagine the
airspeeds and low altitudes the system would be needed at,
this could also simplify your design needs.
I have been drawing up some ideas for a racer, and now that
class has finished for the semester, I can start building an Aero.
I got an "A" with ZBrush, and the final work came out fairly well.
Next semester is ZBrush Part Two, and another CADD class.
Will be looking into getting the software and a Wacom tablet
over the semester break, along with more modeling work.
Once the Aero is complete, I start up my commercially named
DA account, set up some artwork for informal portfolio needs.
Commissions would be something I would have to prepare a
quality product for, Patreon has too many fluff accounts that
simply collect money.
Out of principle, I have to offer clients something of value.

Hi mate!
Congratulations on your A, that's... Quite a feat. Well done!
Also thank you very much!
Hehehe, you're not the first one to mention escape pod, and I agree it's the best option in terms of crew survivability.
However ejection seats look soo cool... Besides everyone else seem to make pods so why conform...
The flight instrumentation is not going to be helmet displayed. Again I agree with you. From a pure tech pov they are cutting edge and probably best.
The reason I am not opting for it is simply because helmet HUD's are invisible outside the helmet.
There's to my knowledge no good way to present it in 3D, especially without a helmet or pilot, which will make for a dreadfully boring cockpit.
I am instead going to make some basic instruments on the console together with mid air holo displays or wrap around screens.
They are quite possibly a step back in terms of tech, but I think they look much more dramatic even if they're old fashioned.
I haven't checked out Patreon enough to form an opinion, but out of curiosity.
How could one get patreons and at the same time keep an account with images for free here on DA?
You'd be a fool or extremely kind to pay for it.

I would guess, Mr.Joachim, concerning my intended pursuits is
to offer samples on DA with full resolution - and content - on
Patreon. I have stories that are SciFi Erotica which would be
banned on Deviant by default. Strange . . . they seem not so
deviant when it comes to art sometimes . . .
If anything, whatever work I do with commissions could be
ultimately made work in building a suitable portfolio for a
company in the field. So comics, 3D models, design work,
logos, et al to broaden the skillsets.
Or maybe use ArtStation for the online portfolio needs . . .?
Now, for your Aero, I found detailed graphic images of the
F16C Block52 Viper instrument panels that may serve your
needs. By the time you read this, I will have posted them
in a folder titled "F16 Viper" on the Flickr! page. It may help
you get that feel of detailed authenticity for any screen shots
you choose.
I will likely have to use a "polarized" canopy as I doubt I can
build a seat and instrumentation in a timely fashion. I may be
using one of the engines in your parts kit, and will be certain
to credit you in the notations.
Hope the images help.

I think a "polarized" canopy is a great idea for time saving, and it let's you focus on other parts of the design.
After all what's the use of a stunning cockpit in a craft that looks half measured.
The overall design is always far more important than anything else.
Use the engines, that's what they're there for!
By the looks of all the extremely badly camouflaged porn already on DA I very much doubt you'd be banned. It'd have to be pretty saucy stuff for them to do that...

Trials and tribulations, Mr.Joachim.
Finished drawing Aero Racer ideas on paper, thought I could start building on SU,
and Pixel Pencil just posted a batch of candidate designs that were going along
what I happened to be doing with airframe shapes.
I was having some serious problems and setbacks with defining curving shapes
with Follow Me concerning setting up the contour line for the profile to extrude to.
Just when I thought I had a method, Pixel Pencil publishes his own impressive
work . . . his "reject" ideas all have serious potential.
Now some thinking to do over the design . . . the ram scoop air inlets along your
Aero Racers wing for the thrust-vectoring reaction control system are outstanding!
I might proceed with my design anyway . . . but it feels like it might be too similar
to some of the reject designs. Assuming I can shape the design as I imagined it.
Must work faster with these things.

Hi, good to hear from you! I am glad you like the "NACA" ducts, thank you!
A professor at my college once told us that we should steal like ravens.
He said you should take ideas from everywhere because in the end what you make is going to be entirely your own.
I wouldn't be concerned about my design being even very similar to another.
Besides his rejects are just that.. Free to be born somewhere else. Also they cover a lot of ground, there are at leats a couple that have an uncanny likeness to mine.
My aircraft also look very much like some the ones made for the Wipeout game... That hasn't stopped me. In fact if it had,
we wouldn't be having this conversation since there would be no Martian Aero Racer Challenge
Can you tell one passenger jet from another? Or an F15 from an F18 at a glance (okay guys like us probably can with one eye..)
As for the problem you're having with defining the curves for extrusion paths. I feel for you.
Welcome to my life.. when you get as good as you are now, design starts being not about how to build shapes, but how to find the right one.
It's what takes up almost all my time these days. Finding the right shape.
I work slow too. it's damn frustrating, but post wips. Those are the ones that are entertaining because they let people fall in love with your design, and they want to follow your progress, make comments and suggestions etc. It's what makes you grow as an artist and it keeps the challenge alive.

Actually, Mr.Joachim, I could tell at a glance what sub-model of
F15 Eagle and F/A18 Hornet . . .
"That is an F15C, dedicated Air Superiority, that is an F/A18E,
commonly called 'Rhino' in the fleet instead of 'The Bug'. Both
for the fact the Super Hornet is heavier and that antenna on
the nose in front of the canopy . . ."
Same with F16 Vipers . . . I did not understand why the Block60
was not purchased by the Air Force, until I learned the aircraft
would outperform the f35 by an overwhelming and embarrassing
margin. They had dogfight exercises with a "obsolete" F16D two
seater with ferry fuel tanks: the Viper killed the 35 repeatedly.
The test wranglers were then scrambling to make excuses . . .
If that plane is not cancelled - we know too many egos are
involved for that to happen - it will get American and NATO
pilots killed in combat.
I would have been a combat pilot if not for a bad year of math
in middle school. The "teacher" was one known for picking a
"Dummy" to torture . . . I got the nod. Barely survived math
after that. Now having to revisit it for no real reason is bringing
back bad memories, too.
Anyway, thank you for the encouragement, back to the polygons!

Hehehe, I kind of knew you'd arrest me on that...
Still though I wouldn't worry too much about skin deep similarities.
I've also heard that the block 60 F16 absolutely hammered the F35.
Apparently it's not going to be an issue since the F35 is supposed to have
superior stealth, and much better OVR capabillities so it doesn't need the same dog fighting skills.
We'll probably find out in a few years..
Personally I think 6th gen fighters will be drones.. They seem to be far superior until someone hacks into one and it turns on us...
Man, that must have been tough to swallow. No flight school because of math...
Now, grace the gallery with a WIP shot of your racer!
