Well, it's mainly because she's a mutant who went through a freak accident at school, which caused her to have a mix of British and Japanese ethnicity in her appearance (the former due to her accent, the latter due to her physical appearance), as well as mutant genes in her DNA. Additionally, the accident gave her psychic and telekinetic powers (ex. her telepathic flower effect).
