What program do you use to render and design the ships?

As per the description I use Lightwave for my renders. Mainly anyway. While I do some modeling myself, the 3D models are not usually my own work.

I use 3D Studio Max mainly. I tried getting into blender, but find that the user interface still requires a lot of investment. I haven't used Milkshape at all. Thanks

how long did it take you to learn everything?

I'm still learning... but I started out about 15 years ago. I would recommend picking one thing you really want to make in 3D and concentrate on making that. Through that process you will learn all sorts of techniques you'll reuse again & again.
I also took a course a couple of years ago in 3DS to refresh my skills which was also very useful. It was a 12 week course you could do in your own time. You could see if something is in your local area.

Thanks a lot, 15 years? Thats quite a long time, haha. But I'll follow your advice and concentrate on one thing at a time... I think once you grasp it, it gets easier and easier. But until then - it's going to be about 15 years, haha. Thanks again!
