Hi,

Sadly, due to a profound lack of muse, I haven’t really been drawing much in the last few years. I’m trying to fix that though.

Have a hard time believing you're blind, BUT I won't be too skeptical. Lovely artwork and a great skill and sense of lighting and color. Amazing work!

I'm legally blind, which means I have some vision, but not enough to drive, get around without a cane or dog, or read without magnification.  Its why my full works look less polished than my thumbnails.

Your art shows a great grasp of lighting, color and form, but I feel like it could be so much more if you focused and polished it a little more.  I thought maybe you just worked at low resolution, but some of the pictures I looked at indicated a very large resolution still with similar problems. The main thing that turns a gorgeous thumbnail into a less appealing full view is the jagged sharp edges (I don't know if you just paint out a mask and never refine the edges of it? thats kind of what it looks like but I don't know).  I'd like to encourage you to maybe find some exercises in technique (feng zhu I've heard is quite useful to a lot of people!) experiment with brushes and just play around with tools, transparency and techniques and see if you can tighten it up a little. I think your work could be really fantastic if you put some effort into polish.

Secondly, I started this gallery around the time when I lost a significant portion of what eyesight I did have and have gradually learned to use what I have left to more effect over the intervening ten or so years, both of the paintings you left comments on are quite old, though Lover of Light will always be one of my personal favorites

WindSeeker In reply to AnnaRDunster [2015-01-06 04:00:40 +0000 UTC]

A large part of the problem here is that I am legally blind and generally do not notice the problems with my work until long after I have finished a piece.  I can't quite describe my vision to you as I've never seen with normal eyesight, but I know what you mean to an extent.  I have a lot of difficulty seeing small detail which is why for me, the big images look like the thumbnails would to you I suppose, but yea, I can see partially out of one eye and use a Seeing Eye dog to get around.

AnnaRDunster In reply to WindSeeker [2015-01-11 14:58:10 +0000 UTC]

Thats a bummer   (and just fyi, the pieces I comment on aren't always the ones I like best, just the ones I have comments about )

I totally understand if it's not worth it to fight with it, but if you did want to try I wonder if there are any filters or tools that might be able to help? The stuff you do at higher resolution, maybe because you are zoomed in better so the details smooth out when you shrink the image, the details are fine, but what I mainly notice is jagged spots and gaps in the underlying color layer. Im not sure what general process you use, but if it's some variation of laying out a base layer, and then painting shadows highlights etc on top of it, maybe you could try doing a layer select on the base layer, and expanding/feathering the selection by a few pixels, and doing a color fill on that before continuing the painting?  I noticed this especially on "The horned one" and "february - amethyst". Then again it's not as apparent in the newer works, maybe I only really notice it on the older ones because of how much the thumbnail image appeals to me to begin with and your method's changed enough to resolve it already

by the way - thanks for the watch!!

WindSeeker In reply to AnnaRDunster [2015-01-13 00:52:11 +0000 UTC]

Yea, back when I did February-Amethyst, and the preceding Garnet, my techniques were quite different.  Still, the jagged bits are not something I can just glance at the image and see.the problems.  I even zoom in and try to check the edges, but I still have a good chance of missing something.

I have a full "walkthrough" sort of thing on this image:
which is linked in the description if you're interested.  In more recent works, I've tried to do outlines and fill layer the color in, but that too is difficult due to needing to make the thing a closed shape.  I appreciate the feedback though

AnnaRDunster In reply to WindSeeker [2015-01-27 14:48:07 +0000 UTC]

One thing that might help to do an outline then fill, is to use the tools that let you place points and adjust the angles of the lines before finalizing a selection (I forget what it's called), assuming you have a program that has that tool. (Photoshop does)   If you haven't tried it before you might experiment and see if it helps you. It lets you place and adjust a (possibly curved) line between two points, or however many points you want to add, then turn it into a selection (which if you wanted you could then save as an alpha channel to make it easy to select again next time).  But I'm not sure whether or not it would be more or less difficult for you to use, it might be harder to see the markers you grab to adjust it.

But whatever you do keep at it, like I said in the earlier comment the overall lighting, form, composition in many of your pieces is just great, and makes enjoyable pictures to look at in any case
good luck!
