I'd be happy to give you any tips/help if you're feeling lost

As for clearer digital camera images, you really need to try and take a focused image at time of shooting - can you focus your camera manually? Or try taking it from different distances.
The lighting's also quite important. Try to get an even, white, not too harsh lighting onto your pic. I use a desk lamp held at a distance.
I usually find the camera's built-in flash unhelpful.

Once on your computer, you can improve the pic by cropping it, sharpening it if it's a bit blurry (most image editors give you that option), and adjusting the brightness/contrast.
