I can only speak from my own experience, but I did eighteen months with Animation Mentor, learning CG character animation. From there I went on to do the first job offered, and the next one was in games. I've done a couple films and several games in the past three years since graduation. But that's strictly animation, not game development.

I guess my best advice is to get at least *some* relevant schooling for your desired career, and then pursue the shirt out of it!
