# About me
I've been drawing since I was 5 yr old (maybe younger if you count the scribbles in my parents books) and started drawing digitally around 18 yrs old. I use a Wacom Bamboo Create and Manga Studio 5 for my inks. Sometimes I use Paint Tool SAI for coloring and occasionally Photoshop CS4.
I'm married (since 2003) to Aremke and own some adorable cats.
My hobbies are drawing, wasting time online, reading books, watching comic book movies, and occasionally bicycling (when weather permits). I've been with dA since practically the beginning but you'd never know it by my page views (heeh).
Beloved Journal Entries About Cheap Wacom Tablet Alternatives:
[Cheap] Alternatives to Wacom Intuos ProThis is a companion journal to go along with me " Cintiq Alternatives " entry. While Cintiq's are amazingly cool, and so are their alternatives, they are still $300 or more. A lot of people just DON'T have that money. So this journal focuses on drawing tablets that compare to Wacom's Intuos Pro line.Note: This is a US based perspective, so most links will be referring to North American customers. However, many of these brands are available internationally! There are several brands that offer up alternatives to Wacom tablets. They are Huion/Turcom, Monoprice, and Ugee.Things to keep in mind with ALL of these tablets. They all come with bat...
Cintiq Alternatives - Many and Varied!Updated: 5/3/15I'm sure we all remember the first time we read about the Wacom Cintiq . A monitor you can draw on... a dream come true. Then you look at the price tag and your heart breaks a bit and your wallet wheezes. The smallest costs $800 and is 13" (as of this writing) and everything else is $999 and up. No mattter how fantastic a piece of hardware may be, it's really hard to justify that price tag. (Especially considering how old most the tech is that Wacom is using.)Of course there are alternatives. It's possible to build something like a Cintiq all on your own. Of course, the risk to doing these kinds of things is that you coul...

Update: While Monoprice are still good tablets, unless you absolutely need a 12x9 tablet, I recommend getting a HUION or a UGEE tablet from places like Amazon.com . Huion and Ugee update their drivers and tend to be more compatible, plus they're pretty good at responding to questions. :)I ordered directly from Monoprice's website, and received my item in 4 days using UPS ground. Be a Digital Artist, without Pirating or Starving!Journal Updated: May 2015
It use to be, in ye olden times, it was difficult to break into the digital art field without some serious cash. Everyone insisted you needed Intuo (but you settled for a 4 x5 Graphire) and Photoshop or Painter was the way to go (which you pirated because you didn't have $500+ lying around). Having a computer that could run a resource heavy program like Photoshop was often difficult too (you dealt with it). That was then, this is now. Breaking into the Digital Art field is a whole lot easier AND cheaper. Method 1: "The Work With What You Have" Method I know people are telling you to get a tablet and that you absol...
How to Make Authentic Tasting Japanese CurryI lived in Japan for 4 years. I've tasted various kinds of Japanese curry and then attempted to mimic them at home. After many many MANY failures, I finally found the "sweet spot". I now share it with you, so that you TOO may enjoy a bit of genuine Japanese cuisine at home. ;) First, you need the right kind of curry mix. The most common curry found in the US stores is Golden Curry. It tastes OK but is salty and sort of heavy on the palate. Vermont Curry is my preferred choice. It's got a milder more balanced flavor. The problem is I can't find it in stores! I buy it from Amazon.com in packs of 10 . (And, no, Indian Curry is not even remot...

Monoprice is coming out with a Cintiq alternative next month. Uses the UC-Logic technology. Around 400 bucks.

Yep, I learned about that a few months ago. I'm skeptical of their choice of monitors (the quality of the monitor is going to make or break that tablet) so I'll need to hear first hand accounts of how well it works before I can comment one way or the other.

Ok! Here's a copy: I've heard a lot of good things about Huion! I recommend watching this video , which explains how to install the drivers. The tips he gives will save you a LOT of frustration. Should, heaven forbid, you run across a more serious problem please use my Monoprice FAQ . Both Huion and MP tablets use UC-LOGIC brand boards which means my FAQ works for either one.
Let me know how you like the H610 when you get it! I've not had my hands on one personally and have had to settle for stories from the owners.

now that ive had a chance to test how the feel of it all, I can say a little bit about the tablet. The pressure sensitivity is an adjustment. It allows me to apply more smoothing to my paintings and such, wihc is appreciated, and yet all I have to do is increase the pressure sensitivity in Sai and it applyes hard colors in a snap, so it works well in combination with whatever program you choose to adjust the sensitivity on.
Always remember to unlick the pen when youre done is a pen, you catch yourself when youre away from your tablet double checking in your mind whetehr you set the pen battery off or not, so that i admit to not liking.
Its a wide tablet, a very noticable upgrade from the bamboo. I was used to drawing with both the bamboo and my laptop on my lap, but now i have to actually adjust myself to where I can set my laptop on a rest while i draw with the tablet on my lap xD not exactly a bad point, just something worth saying.
All in all, i will probably be able to create crisper and smoother pictures with practice now. Im happy i was able to get such a cheap tablet that performs so decently, and im happy I didnt end up forking over so much cash for an intuos. EVery time I turn on the tablet i worry that it wont break or it wont respond, but it works and turns on at the dime, every time so far <3

Hurrah! I'm so happy that brand worked out for you! I would LOVE to see your first digital art created using the Huion tablet... would you be willing to comment on this thread with a link when you finish a piece?
This is why I always recommend people try the cheaper tablets before they fork over a bunch of money to Wacom. I really have nothing against Wacom, they are a GREAT brand, but if there's something cheaper that does just as well, there's no reason at all not to give it a try first, ya know?

Hello, I noticed you use a monoprice tablet. I've had one for almost a year now and I absolutely hate it due to it's incompatibility with programs. I noticed that you made a very nice picture in Manga Studio 5. How'd you manage to make your monoprice work with that program? Mine has trouble with just about anything. The only thing it seems to agree with is SAI. With Photoshop my lines end up looking unsmooth, I'm not sure if that's just photoshop though. But other programs just don't even recognize my tablet at all. I've tried Gimp, Sketchbook, Mangastudio, Fire Alpaca and a few others. I can't yet get something to replace this tablet so I want to know if there's a trick to make it work properly.

Have you read my Monoprice Tablet FAQ? (It's linked in my profile..) Have you done any of the steps in Question 6? I had to do everything in there to get the tablet to function right (except step 4, which I only just added a few days ago) on my computer. My husband, however, installed the CD drivers, restarted his computer, plugged in his tablet, and everything worked immediately. If you've tried my suggestions in the FAQ, check out step 4 in Question 6. It was suggested by someone who couldn't get the tablet to work at all. (But don't skip the other steps if you haven't tried them!)
I'm sorry this has been so frustrating! If you decide to get a Wacom tablet, read my Journal on some tips for getting them cheaper: fav.me/d5fe5kq

I've tried some of the things in the FAQ that I could replicate with windows 8 (I've got that unfortunately, and what's worse without downgrade rights, so I'm kinda stuck with win8). I've tried every driver that I could find, and I've tried to disable the driver verification the win8 way (I think it only works once per restart) as well as the turning off of Tablet PC input from services and win8 task manager. I think I'm kinda just stuck in incompatibility limbo until years in the future when I can afford something better.

Thank you for the advice, I read his FAQ and I feel like the key for things to work on windows 8 the drivers have to be from SOLOLY Huion. I left a comment on his FAQ of what I did to fix everything~<3 TODAY IS A HAPPY DAY!

Excellent! Complete uninstall is super important to getting the drivers to work right. I'd like to say this is a problem with just off-brand tablets but Wacom has issues too. :-/
