Just had a look through your portfolio... some gorgeous artwork in there. You have a lovely art style; so much colour and energy! I wouldn't be too surprised to see you working for a company like Pixar within the next ten years or so; you've got the talent to make waves in the industry.

Hey! Thanks. Your stuff is pretty stellar, too. I am not at BYU right now. I am living at home and working/illustrating and getting my life put back together and earning money and junk, ya know? I miss BYU and the creative people there. Such a great place.Β

Aw, thanks! That's cool! Yeah, I just finished up there, and I'm feelin' the same way. It really is an awesome place. Of course, a huge part of what makes it awesome is the amazing people such as yourself; I'm so glad to make a connection with you!

Hey Karly! I came across your site while researching BYUI. My daughter, Mandy, Β is looking for a good Illustration program to transfer to and BYUI came up. Texas universities do not have Illustration as a major. She is non-LDS, so looking into how that would go for her. Also, she wanted to know how much the school teaches or focuses on digital illustration compared to a school like Ringling. Any help with answers or advice?Β
Thank you,Β
Lisa Caraway

Hello, Lisa! I took a few art classes at BYU-Provo (different school), but luckily I do know a bit about BYU-Idaho even though I haven't attended school there.
The illustration program there is really good. BYU-I has a relatively small campus (like, I think it's a 10 minute walk from end-to-end of campus) and the student body isn't as big as Provo's, so that means more one-on-one time with the teachers. The BYU-I illustration program is pretty well-rounded -- the curriculum covers all mediums, traditional and digital, but I think they lean toward traditional media a little more.
I think BYU-I has this cool program where if you get certain grades you are guaranteed certain scholarships. Like 4.0 gets full tuition and 3.0 gets 1/4 tuition or something like that.Β
I will say that I have been to BYU-I to visit friends and it is REALLY COLD from the months of September to May. So...all school year. And if you're from Texas...that's probably especially a big adjustment. I lived in hot Vegas most of my life, but I went to high school in cold Utah, so I know cold...and BYU-I is ridiculously cold. So, if your daughter doesn't like the cold, she'll be miserable. Haha.Β
If she's interested, BYU-Provo is really good too. What kind of thing does your daughter want to do with her art?
At BYU Provo the illustration program is split into two tracks: Traditional and Concept. Β
Traditional Track is focused on painting and drawing traditionally, illustrating children's books, etc.
Concept Track is focused on character design for movies and games, environmental design, all usually digitally done.Β
If she gets on either of these tracks, she still has flexibility on what classes she takes in the major. They try to round you out in all areas of illustration.Β
If she wants to do stuff for Disney/Pixar or Dreamworks or something, BYU-Provo has a really good relationship with those animation studios. They often hire BYU-P students right out of college.
As far as being non-LDS goes, she'll be welcomed with open arms. People are very inclusive from my experience (I am LDS) but I have many friends who went to BYU-Provo with me that aren't LDS. They have always felt welcomed. Sometimes she may encounter people that want to share their religious beliefs with her, but if she's not interested they won't hate her or anything. They mean well.
There are clubs on either campus for non-LDS people to connect if they want, but they are not treated any differently. Both colleges have something called an Honor Code that you sign upon being admitted. It's basically a promise that you'll keep your conduct and appearance clean in all ways.
It's a very safe, clean, and family-friendly type of environment. Like, rated G. haha.
BYU has somewhere around a 70% acceptance rate, and BYU-I has a 97% acceptance rate.
If she wants to apply for an art scholarship to either of the schools, that's possible. That's how I got in. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask!

Thanks, Karly! I will definitely pass it on to her. We looked at BYU Provo, but not sure what her chances are on getting in as her transfer GPA is 2.9 and I have read that they usually don't accept less than 3.8.Β

Okay, good. But it would be worth a shot to apply to BYU anyway, especially for a Talent Award Scholarship. That's a scholarship that is awarded to students based on their portfolio rather than their grades. I had a had almost the same GPA, but I got the Talent Award and that was my ticket in. It's really worth a shot! And applying doesn't take much work. You just send pictures your best ten pieces on a CD along with the short application form and that's all.

Thank you! I love BYU. It's a great place to go if you plan on going into the film side of art. They have a great Animation Program. The illustration program is really great, too. Disney and Pixar recruit MANY people from BYU. So hopefully things will pan out there!
I am LDS! I am glad you found me! Are you a Latter-Day Saint yourself?

I am LDS! I'm a miamaid in Bulgaria because of my dad's job. It's so cool to find out that one of my favorite artists is LDS, too. Yeah, I wanna go to BYU and try to become a character designer for disney. I've got a few years, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed I'm accepted!

Wow! Bulgaria! What is it like there?Β
I am honored to know I am one of your favorite artists. You are way ahead of where I was at your age. You have a greater understanding of the human figure than I did and your style is more developed than mine was. Keep up the good figures -- that is really key in preparing for college.
If you want to become a character designer, BYU is certainly a good place.
Work hard in school. Even if you don't get the best grades or test scores, you can still get in. Just make sure you work on making a good portfolio. That's what really matters.
I wasn't accepted into BYU initially, actually. I got my rejection email in March of 2010. Then a few weeks later I got an email from BYU congratulating me on my full ride art scholarship (I had applied for it in February that year). . . But it didn't make sense. I didn't email them back or anything because I was confused. Then the next day I got an email saying that they had reevaluated my application and I was accepted.Β
Definitely some Divine Intervention there.
At any rate, even if you don't get into BYU, BYU Idaho has a WONDERFUL illustration program. That's where I was going to go. Things will sort out the way they are supposed to!
