Well...usually I like to use shape language to make the faces seem more expressive, and bring out their personality.
Like, circles show softness and friendliness. Squares show strength and sensibility. And triangles show intimidating or settling tones. You may also combine more than one of those shapes to create more expression. Same goes for body types/eye shapes.
You can also try drawing the silhouette of your characters too, to check if you can tell em apart.
