It's interesting how different people notice different things. For an example, I played my brother some Mew and he said "that's produced well!"
I showed him a music DVD and he said "wow they're using a mac!"
And I was talking to someone on a band forum about a video clip and he said "hey I'm interested in the way the bass player sometimes uses a pick and sometimes doesn't."
Which of course is something I didn't even think about! (me being stupid with musical instruments.) I was too busy thinking about how wierd it was that the singer blinked on every syllable!

yeah, i guess it's all how different people percieve things; usually according to what they're interested in. Like when you listen to music, are you usually more inclined to listen to the music or the lyrics? I tend to listen to both but usually it's the lyrics, and that's I guess why I really love the White Stripes.
It's silly, but because I'm a magazine addict I can notice stupid things like where people got their clothes or if they're a rip off of something else... really dumb... i kind of wish I didn't do that.
Or if I'm listening to new music, I can sometimes pick their influences by the way they play or the way they write. I notice lots of pop culture stuff.

Well, I noticed stuff like that a certain guitar progression in a 'phonics song was exactly the same as the repeating chords in a Doves song! I don't think it was plagurism though. And I notice people who look like other people XD
I'm pretty quick at lyrics. And I can generally tell whether a chook is a hen or a rooster pretty fast, or roughly how old it is, whether it's laying etc.
I can generally tell a singer pretty fast by their voice. I got a Doves album and forced myself to listen to each individual instrument - had to teach myself which bit was the bass..stuff like that. Yeah, I don't really think about what I notice.
I applied for several jobs today. Let's hope I get one! Tahn is so desperate she went to MACCAS!

Yeah. I guess it's because a) I heard a rumour that the infamous Elbow might come to Aus this year and b) I'm going overseas in June-July (I'm pretty sure) and want to have cash for that! As well as the fact that money is coolll!
I'm trying to recreate 19th century floral wallpaper using tropical orchids instead of roses and things...god I have too much time on my hands.
(I'll probably die a rapid death when I go back to school though

no i'm not insulting photography, most photorealists don't use their own photographs so that expression (the photograph) doesn't belong to them, they are just copying it. they are more draftsman and technicians than creative forces. and i'm not sure you do rightly understand what i meant when i was talking about expression. it's not subject matter that's commonly lacking, it's the. . . artistic expression (sorry i just used the word in the definition).
. . .what i mean is, the stuff that makes makes an artis memorable distinct and unique. you know michelangelo's work because of the way he used crosshatching, because of the shrewd way he posed his figures, beacuse he was the only one who could pose a figure like that and still have it come out looking true. you know a ralston crawford because if it's calculated and industrial look. you know monet's work because of his impasto color, and brushwork. you know singer sargent's work because of his sensuous color. you know duchamp's work because of his sarcasm. you know schiele becuse it looks like it was painted by a creep.
these things are (what i mean by) expression, and these things are lacking in photorealistic artwork.
and you're right about most people being easily amazed by it. it's an easy way to get accolades (know from expirience). but the truth is, it is ninety-four times more difficult to capture the likeness of someone sitting in front of you with a few describing brush strokes, than it is to render it up from a photograph (know this from expirience aslo).
my answer for your last question: goes back to the idea of where they get their photographs from, i would say there's some expression there if you took the photo, but most people who take artistic photos don't turn them into photorealisic artwork; they just figure 'why spend 100 hours doing something a camera can do in a hundreth of a second.' a subject matter of a bombing etc definatly has more expression than. . .oh i don't know. . . a drawing of angelina jolie or captain jack sparrow. but you can (and should try to) do more.

that's okay, I find it interesting. Its true about the photorealism stuff, I agree with you. There isn't really a distinct style for photorealism -- it stays the same because that's the style. After a while it just looks like somebody's photo album of cars and restaurants and shit. Hehe. Photorealism of a shit -- now that would be making a statement. It's kind of like those ABBA coverbands my mum drags me to. Bahaha.
