Okay, first, take a look at the two banners I've made for EEG: [link] and [link] . Both banners have symbolism in both the colors and the objects. The first one has lightning, and bright, red, angry colors, because anger is important to the story. The second one is green, and has a lighthouse- both are symbols of hope, which helps show the story's theme of redemption. When you make a banner, keep in mind what you want to show without words, like prominent emotions and symbols.
Then find your models. I used Google Image to find the people and things to put in the banner. The people I chose resemble the cartoon characters from the show that the story was written for. And EEG suggested the symbols like lightning and lighthouses. So find symbols that represent important parts of your story, then find photos that feature those symbols.
Once you have a photo, cut it out of the background with Photoshop, or whatever program you use. (Anything except MS Paint can work). Keep the end result in mind: since I can't cut lightning away from its background, I made it the background for the entire banner. But I could cut the people away from the backgrounds, it just takes patience when you're dealing with the hair. Sometimes you have to tint the edges of hair back to the original color, since they tend to blend with the original background.
Sometimes the photo you want to use has an arm or something not included, and you have to paint them in yourself. Be patient- copy, paste, and flip can be helpful, but you'll still have to touch up the small details. In that first banner, the girl's right arm was cut out, so I repainted it with colors from the rest of her coat.
Finally, it's time to drag, drop, and resize. Remember what the people are supposed to represent. If you need them to turn or face something, then flip them, resize if necessary, and make sure their eyes are facing whatever they're supposed to face. Then add in the text, work on the smaller details, look at it from a different angle, and repeat until you like it!
