A userbox is similar to DeviantArt's stamps, but they originated on Wikipedia and wiki websites to put on user's pages.

In addition to stamps and profile decorations, they serve as a symbol of pride (i.e. if you're part of the LGBT community) and to express yourself and your interests. You could add them to your profile or your about if you have a separate stash entry/journal for that.
