Description
This is a screenshot that I took while playing the cyberspace sections in the recently released remake of Looking Glass Studios' 1994 classic System Shock, developed by Nightdive Studios. I've never played the original game, but I've heard plenty of good things about it, how it was ahead of its time, and how its DNA can still be felt in FPS games like Deus Ex and BioShock, just to name a few. Granted, the original game felt a bit clunky to play, especially in regard to its user interface which takes a while to get used to, and some designs have become dated since 1994 (the cyberspace levels in the original game were represented in wireframe with minimalistic polygons, as it was common in the early-mid 90s PC games, and the game predated 3D-accelerated graphics cards by a few years). You ever heard of the phrase "childhood ruined"? "Childhood enhanced" is a good way to describe Nightdive Studios' System Shock remake. This remake started life as a Kickstarter campaign in 2016, and nearly 7 years later, the end result really paid off. In terms of gameplay, graphics and atmosphere, it feels retro, yet modern at the same time - a faithful remake of a classic game that's nearly 30 years old with some appropriate changes where necessary and modern touches.
