Description Dad's dragon minus the line art. I thought it had a neat effect.

Neat, it looks just like a painting!

Thank you!

It certainly does give it a painted feel...I've always wondered what it would be like to paint...maybe someday I'll find out.

*though for now I'll continue to learn the GIMP as best I can*

I'm attempting a painting out of a stock photo I found here. I don't really like realism that much, but it's supposed to make your cartoony art better if you know about the real stuff. At least, that's what my art teacher always told me.
And actually, it would be cool to have a semi-realistic style for when I want to make serious stuff.

That sounds like a good idea...A very good idea actually! It's ironic for me because I wanted to draw in a more "serious" art style for so long...then I came up with John Clyde and went back to doing a cartoony style. (Though this time it was by choice, whereas before it was because I couldn't draw any other way.)

Occasionally I tried working from a photo, but I wasn't very good at it...but it DOES help to have a reference. I think your art teacher was right, it probably WOULD help your cartoon work. I was just thinking about how Disney usually used live animals for reference.

Yeah, my brother told me about that! I couldn't believe it until he showed me a picture of a deer in a studio.
I'm not so good at drawing straight from a photo either. It comes out looking weird and distorted. A few months ago I drew my brother from an old photo, and he looked strangely evil. Like my sketch was possessed or something!

I know what you mean! I tried working from a photo and it just came out so strange looking...it SEEMED like I was doing everything right, but it still came off odd. (Perhaps they all come out like that until you have a lot of practice...)

That's what they tell me. Now let's hope they're right!

...That little blinky purple face is adorable.

I'm overly fond of emoticons...JNels says I'm a living emoticon myself! (He says if he were to replace my head with a smiley face, no one would know the difference.) *I like to think of myself as "expressive"*

My problem is being overactive with my hand gestures. I rely on my hands far too much with self-expression, especially when I feel my words aren't doing their job. It wouldn't be a bad thing if I wasn't clumsy as well... Many innocent people got wrongfully slapped.

I've got relatives that "talk with their hands." They wave their hands around a lot and occasionally people have to be careful not to be slapped. *so I'm used to that, and just stand a prudent distance back*

I don't normally use my hands often when speaking--but I DO use my feet for comical effect. A silly walk, an outrageous dance...just to get a few laughs and smiles.

I like physical humor, I'm the biggest Charlie Chaplin fan I know.

It must have taken so long to colour all the glints of light!

Don't I know it!

It was amazing enough that I actually drew scales on the dragon in the first place--but then I did shading on each INDIVIDUAL one...I still can't believe I did it. O,O

Normally I skim over stuff like that.

Whoa, the colors are so nifty here. Kind of a painted effect, eh? Makes it look very different, that's for sure.

Aye, that's what I was thinking--it was so interesting to see it without any lines...
