I was nervous. I had to admit it. Sure, both my parents and brothers had told me that there was nothing to be nervous about, I still was. I mean, getting sorted is IMPORTANT. The house you're in effects the way people view you. And I didn't want them to view me harshly. Besides, the next seven years depended on one little word, issued from the mouth of a hat. 'Ravenclaw. Please, let it be Ravenclaw.' I took a deep breath. I was panicking already, and I could feel a panic attack coming on. So, I focused on something else. Anything else. The dark-haired girl standing next to me looked over and smiled. "Don't worry, whatever house you get into will be the right fit!" I stared at her for a moment, trying to control my emotions. On one hand, I was shocked that this strange girl was unfazed by the Sorting Ceremony. On the other, I was grateful that she had at least tried to reassure me. "Tha-" I started, but before I had a chance to finish, the name "Katherine Thagin" was called, and the girl was soon seated on the stool paced in front of the long teacher's table. For once, I was genuinely interested in which house someone other than myself would be sorted in. "Ravenclaw!" was the final verdict, adding one more reason for my desire to be in the house. I might actually have a friend. "Raen West" I started, recognizing my own name. 'OK. Breath' I said to myself as I reached the stool, finally sitting down. "Hmm... What an interesting mind" The hat's voice was rough, almost as scratchy as the fabric it was made of. "Creativity, yes, you have a lot of that... Courage, yes, and ambition... Oh, that does make things easier! Such a thirst for knowledge!" I suddenly realized that the hat was in my head, speaking only with me. I was deciding whether to be relieved that no one else could hear it's brooding over my thoughts, or angry because it was invading what the third child of seven thinks of as their only personal space, when I realized it was no longer in said personal space. "Ravenclaw!" 'Ravenclaw. I am in Ravenclaw. Thank you, mysterious forces of nature!' I couldn't help but think, as I sat beside Katherine, who smiled at me. I'm beginning to think I might just survive seven years at Hogwarts.
