Description Powerful Birrin societies have engaged in space exploration and exploitation for decades, constructing a number of orbital facilities, satellites, and launching several manned interplanetary missions. The critical orbital systems, with their relay of radio and television data, climate monitoring, GPS signal transmission and global defence, form an expensive and vulnerable investment by the major houses.

Maintenance of these systems, and the manning of interplanetary vehicles, is undertaken by a politically independent astronaut corps funded by an investment pool of nations and organisations with interests in space. Paid well, the corps construct, salvage and decommission orbital objects on a contract basis.

Seen here, a technician sets to work repairing damaged internal systems on an orbital antennae. The large impact-hardened diagnostic package has been integrated with the antennas' interface to root out faulty code or hardware for repair or replacement.

It looks more like the aliens made a trading partner with human explorers given how familiar their technology they use and clothing they wear.Β

I would be curious to see a Birrin get into a suit like that, looks tricky as a hexapod. Great concept and detailing though.Β

I feel like the birrin are only like 50 to 100 years ahead of us in technology... is that assumption true?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Abiogenisis In reply to BirrinFan [2019-01-23 16:17:24 +0000 UTC]

They used to be about 50 ahead of us, though it isnt totally even (better space and nuclear technology, worse social media/miniaturized tech) Now they seem to be about 1980s ish tech level at the time of the book I am working on.

I love how the use of shapes and colours scream 'early earth space exploration' until you notice the finer details, that humans don't bend there, or bulge there, the unfamiliar, made familiar, by the trappings of the most hostile of places. Wonderfull juxtapositions.Β

Wouldn't it make more engineering sense to encase the head in a glass bubble helmet instead of trying to articulate and insulate 4 thin eye stalks? Space suits are inherently stiff because of the pressure differential and I imagine a Birrin with fragile and flexible eye stalks would either tire easily or be completely unable to move hose eye tubes.

Abiogenisis In reply to 1Wyrmshadow1 [2017-10-09 04:58:54 +0000 UTC]

I agree - future designs will probably incorporate a bubble instead

That's a good helmet concept too.

Abiogenisis In reply to ZemplinTemplar [2018-01-18 15:24:28 +0000 UTC]

Cheers. Next time I might do a full bubble though to avoid the eye stalk weak points.

Yes, yes and yet another yes. This is how modern sentient species done right. I wish if some movies did contain such detail. Even in Star Wars series you cant see a full spacesuit...And with that diversity there, its hard to belive that all the creatures have the same requirements and needs to maintain existence. The effort you put into this species is out of this world

On the Birrin's back, there appears to be some sort of symbol. Is it a pressure gauge, or a Birrin insignia?

How big Birrin are compared to humans? Because It would be COOOL to see a human space explorerΒ meeting a Birrin in space, just both floating there. It would also be a little interesting to see what they look like when they eat, in comparison we would look like chipmunks. You make flat-out good art man.
