Description
It was a dull summer Saturday, not too unlike any before it. It was only around the middle of the day, and this whole watching TV thing was beyond boring. Jasmine needed something to do and now. Even if it meant some evil jerk or another rearing his ugly head. Things had been oddly peaceful for the past couple of days and it was not only unnerving, but terribly bland. All those days of wishing it would just stop and here she was regretting it already. With a groan, the teen sunk further down the couch. Her dark eyes glared at the television in front of her. She wasn't even sure what was on anymore. Some stupid children's cartoon or another. Well, if lazing around didn't work, Jasmine figured she might as well try her hand at doing something at least semi-productive. She turned the TV off and pulled herself up from the couch.
"Oi, I was watching that." Zokka, the resident tiger sprite, snapped.
"Too bad. The noise would irritate me." Jasmine replied in a dead tone as she left the room.
Zokka grumbled heatedly to herself and decided to follow her keeper. She floated over behind the human and watched as she retrieved a duster from the hall closet then walked into the kitchen.
Jasmine started to halfheartedly dust the cupboards. She paused when she reached the end. Something seemed... off. It felt like there was a draft. That didn't make sense, though, there were no doors or windows there aside from the cabinets. Blonde brow furrowing, she dropped the duster and started to feel the wall. It felt different than the others.
"Zokka, come check this out." She called the sprite over, intending to use her phasing abilities. The tiger sprite came as called and tried to pass through the wall. She was a mix of upset and surprised when she found she couldn't.
"Oi! You stupid wall! Just who do you think you're messing with?!" Zokka growled, as if it actually meant anything. "I'll show you!" She extended her tiny claws and scratched furiously at the wallpaper.
"Hey! Hey! Zokka!" Jasmine protested. Honestly, she didn't care about the wallpaper, but her mother certainly would and her mother was anything but a pretty lady when she was angry. She pulled the sprite away from the wall with a stern glare. Zokka returned it with equal intensity for only a moment before she crossed her arms and turned her head away stubbornly.
Jasmine sighed and released the sprite. When she turned back to inspect the damage done, she was surprised to see metal peeking out from underneath the wallpaper. Curiosity piqued, she started sticking her fingers in the holes Zokka had made and started tearing away the paper. Her mother would probably be pissed, but she'd get over it. The thrill of this mystery far outweighed her mother's wrath.
"Hey! You just-" Zokka had started to protest indignantly when she saw what Jasmine had discovered. With a sharp intake of air, the duo marveled at the massive door that had just been unveiled.
"Has this been here the whole time? How did no one notice it? Or maybe they did and just didn't say anything?" Jasmine continued to softly spout out questions as she stared in amazement at the iron door. She reached out to touch it, but Zokka stopped her.
"Wait, wait, wait! Don't you see the sigils all over it?" Zokka cried, pointing urgently to the various red painted marking that covered the door. "What if it explodes or something when you touch it?!"
Jasmine slowly drew her hand back, deciding the sprite had a point. She hadn't noticed the markings before. They weren't anything she recognized, but she had a feeling that they were old and held a lot of power. Even Zokka didn't know them and that was really saying something. The door didn't have any apparent locks of any kind so maybe these symbols were its form of security?
She decided to be bold and take a bit of a risk. If only to satisfy her curiosity. She bent down and retrieved the fallen duster. Slowly, carefully, Jasmine touched the duster to the door. She and Zokka flinched back, preparing for the worst. They waited a couple seconds and still nothing happened.
"I'm going to try it." Jasmine announced. She was done being afraid. It was clearly just a door. What was the worst that could happen? Casting aside her inhibitions, Jasmine tightly grasped the handle of the door and yanked as hard as she could. The door was heavy, but it didn't stick. With a few good pulls, Jasmine was able to get it open.
Behind it stretched a long expanse of darkness with only a tiny light in the center. A hall of sorts. Fueled by adrenaline and wonder, Jasmine decided to forego finding a flashlight and walked right in. The normally fearless Zokka hovered quietly very close behind. She was uneasy. Not because it was dark, either. There was just something ominous about the whole situation.
Jasmine kept a hand on the wall as she walked. It was smooth and cool to the touch, likely also metal. It was solid all the way down, no turns, no painted symbols, no traps, just wall. She wasn't sure if that comforted her or scared her more. Luckily, perhaps, she was coming to the end of it.
The end was a circular room with no windows and only the single entrance/exit. It was completely barren save for the multitude of mirrors that stood along the circumference. Each one seemed to be giving off its own little bit of light, giving the little space an almost moonlit look. That wasn't even the oddest part. While the mirrors looked completely normal, not one of them reflected like it should have. It was just a blank image of the room as if there was no one in it.
"What the..." Jasmine uttered softly, stepping up to the closest mirror to inspect it further. She circled around it once, searching for any clue that might tell her the cause of the strange behavior. She found nothing. Once she had completed the circle, however, she found that the image in the mirror had changed.
This time, there was another girl staring back at her. She looked almost identical to Jasmine, except her hair was a lot longer than Jasmine's normal chin-length style. She was also in a lovely frilly dress, something Jasmine wouldn't be caught dead wearing. The mirror girl wore a confused expression at first but then she smiled and offered a friendly wave. If Jasmine would have had her bat on her, she would have smashed the cursed thing without a second thought. But that was not the case. She could only stare frozen in horror as the image played out.
The mirror girl continued to watch Jasmine for a moment before she looked behind her, as if she had heard something. She gave an apologetic smile and said something, although no sound came out, before she left.
Jasmine wasn't sure if she should scream or cry or run or all three. Before she could decide, she noticed movement in one of the other mirrors. It was yet another girl that could have been her twin. However, this girl didn't look as nice. She looked somewhere between depressed and angry. Her hair stuck up in places and her glaring eyes were dull.
Her lips moved slowly, but again, no sound reached Jasmine.
Said girl could see more movement out of the corners of her vision. That was when she decided she had seen enough. She grabbed Zokka and bolted from the room. She didn't stop until she was safely in the study, the farthest she could be from the kitchen. Slamming the door closed and locking it for extra peace of mind, she collapsed against it. She had never run so hard or so fast in her life, not even when she was literally running for her life. Panting heavily, Jasmine looked up at Zokka. The little sprite was shaking. It was an unusual sight, one she never wanted to see again. She hastily reached out and brought Zokka close to her. Normally, the tiger would have protested and maybe even scratched, but after such an experience, the embrace was welcomed.
The duo sat there like that for several long moments before Jasmine finally released her friend. Looking straight at her she said, "We close the door. We tell no one and we never speak of it again."
"Agreed!"
