Description If one day you happen to find a meteorite in the woods, don’t touch it.
If an offer sounds too good to be true, then trust your gut instinct, it probably is.

Delphi bounced happily alongside her handler on the way to the lab. Argentum trotted nicely at Minami’s other side. They were on their way to the lab owned by one of Mina’s friends. Supposedly the scientist had discovered a brilliant virus that would actually benefit the tokota that was infected with it, rather than hinder them. It didn’t seem to have any effect on humans or other animals, only tokotas. As such, the scientist needed volunteers and asked her friend for help. She claimed to have already tested her own pair and the experiment had gone swimmingly! Of course, any good scientist knew one experiment was never enough so she needed more.

That would be where Delphi and Argentum come in. Minami had signed them up to be part of the next experiment to help out her friend. Also who could say no to making their sweet little tokis better at everything they did? Certainly not her.

The tokis weren’t bothered either. To be fair, they didn’t fully understand just what they were getting into either.

They soon reached the lab, the outside tall, dark, and imposing. The anti-septic smell leaked out from under the door, causing Delphi to wrinkle her nose in distaste. No matter how many times she came here, she would never get used to the stink.

Minami led them in through the simple main door. Inside the lights always felt too bright. Delphi was rather glad for the long hair she had over her eyes. Sometimes it made navigating hard, but in times like this, it was a blessing in disguise.

“Minami! I’m so glad you came! Hurry, hurry! This way!” A dark haired woman with glasses approached them with an eager, almost maniacal smile. She waved her hands frantically in a beckoning motion. With an overjoyed giggle, the woman ducked behind a door.

“Alright, you two heard the lady. Let’s go.” Minami followed her friend without hesitation.

Delphi was starting to get a bad feeling, but she didn’t really have a say in the matter. She hoped her handler wouldn’t let anything catastrophic happen to her.

Argentum didn’t seem bothered by the place at all. Was he oblivious or just dumb? Delphi wasn’t sure, but she almost envied him.

The pair of tokis followed their handler through the door and down an equally brightly lit hallway. The chemical scent from before had only intensified.

Argentum’s nose wrinkled and he glanced over at Delphi. She shook her head at him. She didn’t like it either.
“Alright, it’s in here, come on!” Excited didn’t even begin to describe the scientist. She looked like a toki in front of an all you can eat meat bar.

Minami still didn’t seem bothered and just ushered the tokis into the next room.

It was surprisingly dark compared to the other rooms in the facility. In the center there was a pedestal with an unsuspecting rock sealed in a display case.

The dark haired woman moved in a flurry around the room, muttering to herself while she flipped different switches and put on a pair of gloves. She grabbed a pair of giant tongs and gently lifted the casing off from around the rock. She set the glass aside and then picked up the rock with her tool.

“Okay, who’s first?”

Delphi felt increasingly more uncomfortable the longer she was there.

Argentum apparently didn’t feel the same. Curiosity got the better of him and he approached the rock, which made the scientist somehow even more giddy. He sniffed at the rock and gave an experimental lick.

Horrible mistake. Zero out of ten, would not recommend.

The half mane toki recoiled immediately. He licked frantically at his fur, trying to rid himself of the horrid taste. Why did he think that was a good idea?!

“Yes, yes! Now we wait… It should only take a few minutes to kick in.” The scientist grabbed a notepad and a pen. She watched Argentum like a hawk.

For the first minute and a half or so, nothing happened. He just stood there, looking uncomfortable. Unfortunately, he didn’t have a way to outright tell the humans what was happening so they had to take their best guesses based off of his body language.

Tastes disgusting. Noted.

Then they noticed that his normally silver fur had started to turn darker.

“Um, Alyssa, is that normal?” Minami finally expressed concern for her tokis.

“Nope, haven’t seen that one before. This is amazing!”

The darkness spread fast until his coat was solidly black as night. As the blackness spread, his mass grew. By the end of it all, the toki had tripled in size.

He towered over his handler and the scientist. They weren’t scared until he bared his fangs and barked.

“H-hey, easy, Argentum, it’s okay. We can fix this.” Minami spoke soft and slowly, hoping to calm him down.

Argentum growled. He growled at her. He had never shown any manner of aggression toward her before! Never!

“Alyssa, I don’t know what you did to him, but you need to fix it now!”

“No way! This is amazing! Do you know what I could do with this?!”

Delphi had taken to cowering under a table in a corner of the room. No way was she going anywhere near that weird rock now. NUH-UH!

“I wasn’t asking! You need to bring my baby back now!” Minami slammed her fist on the table Alyssa had been working at to emphasize her point.

Instead, it only served to agitate the overgrown toki.

The room suddenly erupted into chaos. Argentum growled and barked as he ruined his surroundings. His purpose was unclear, but the destruction wasn’t. He snapped anything he could get his massive jaws around and smashed everything else under his paws.

Minami screamed and ran.

Alyssa, the psycho she evidently was, just stood by and eagerly took notes on his behavior.

The noise attracted Argentum’s attention and he took off chasing her. He would have caught up easily, but Delphi had latched onto his tail. She pulled desperately on it, trying to save her handler despite the mistakes the human had made.

The infected toki growled and whirled around and snapped his jaws at Delphi. She narrowly escaped her doom.

Minami, realizing what she had done, stopped and tried to call Argentum’s attention away from the other toki. “H-hey! Over here!”

She waved her arms and tossed a stray bottle she found at him.

He whipped back around toward the human, aiming his giant paw at her.

If it wouldn’t have been for Delphi’s expert distraction, Minami would have been a goner.

The game didn’t last long before they were joined by another tokota. One that appeared outwardly normal. She lept directly into the fray, biting and scratching at Argentum.

It hurt to watch them battle, but it was the only thing preventing further destruction.

It was long and hard fought, but the golden tokota managed to defeat Argentum. He admitted defeat and dashed through the wall out into the wilds that surrounded the building.

Minami and Delphi were left crushed, wondering if they would ever see their beloved friend again.
