The fact is, despite what everybody says about being mad as hell and not-gonna-take-it-anymore, people DO continue to "take it". They've been taking it for 37 years since this movie was made and there's not the slightest indication that people are going to suddenly stop taking it now.
I've read before that the idea of "Network" was instigated by the on-air suicide of a TV news-reporter named Christine Chubbuck. That happened in Sarasota FL in 1974.

very interesting background info, thank you for posting it. I'd have to agree that things have gotten worse. A democracy is only effective if its citizens are informed and caring. I see a plague of people who only care for themselves and trivial matters, such as sports, video games, and television. Our measure of success and happiness is greatly distorted through popular media... so much so that everyone is confused and is constantly seaching for that object that will someday make them happy. They chase the happiness carrot that is perpetually provided by the craftiest of manipulators (advertising and political rhetoric). All in all people are raised like cattle, although, instead of being butchered and consumed, they are taught to be little more than "good" consumers themselves....
