over coffee cups we watched
the moon change its faces,
our freckles cast like constellations
upon our canvas skins.
never spoke, just --
watched

it was enough, i thought,
to be picked apart by
your vulture eyes.
you had wanted that
and only that. i was okay
and we were okay.

we were wrong, weren't we boy ?
to think we could make this work,
emotions waxing and waning
in different cycles, controlling
the ocean currents that
p-p u l l our eyes apart.

we watched over cups, half empty;
willing past the tangibility of the air,
as the world
