Description
Tried out a new style which involves "rendering" or whatever you call the term when you work on one layer. It's actually pretty fun, glad I tried it.I kinda want a print of this now huhu ahh but I'll finish some original stuff first.
I'm open to suggestions, feedback or any comment. <3

I came from ProjectComment Β
Please understand that I, in no way, wish to offend you but rather help you grow as an artist.
CRITIQUES:
I'm not sure how I feel about the drops that come from the bottom of her elbows and top of her head. They kind of disrupt the rest of the piece for me as they make her come off almost in a Japanese anime style like she's 'nervous' or 'sweating'. If she is meant to be nervous it conveys that, if not it may be something you wish to look into? For me they also distract from the spirits. Same with the purple parts outside of the hat, they look like detached antlers and I don't know if they're intentional or just outside detail meant to break up the background.Β
Her right arm (or on the left for the viewer) seems anatomically off, like it bulges too much at the top after the wrist where it should be a smoother line.Β
The left hand could use a bit more detail. You rounded off the fingers in such a way it looks like she's missing them ;_; part of that may also be how they cut into where the book is, instead of wrapping around the book. Like she's pressing the book against her chest and not actually holding it if that makes sense.Β
Is the skirt meant to be pleated? The white lines kind of suggest it is but also look like fold lines so it's hard to tell.Β
You spent a lot of time on little details but I feel the choker and book got a bit left out in that sense as everything else has a consistent amount of detail but both of those are a little flat. A little bit of highlight on the choker and some kind of detail on the book (writing, designs) would help bring them in line with the rest of the piece.Β
I know the background isn't elaborate but I feel like it makes her blouse blend in too much and doesn't provide enough contrast.Β
Overall critique -
While it doesn't detract from this piece, one of the things I noticed in your gallery is you tend to fall back on the same expression for a majority of your pieces. Same eye shape, shame eyebrows, ect. It may help you, as an artist, to try different expressions focusing on how eyes and eyebrows change to reflect mood. I feel like it could really help you grow to explore more expressive emotions and I'd love to see you keep growing!Β
COMPLIMENTS:
The soft shading on the purples is amazing. I love the gentle gradient of the skirt and the way you darkened the edges of the hat while still giving it a highlight.Β
The shading on the skin gives it a wonderful softness and you did a great job of placement of it. A lot of people (myself included) often neglect elbows but giving them a reddish color is a bit more accurate!Β
Her hair is wonderful. Even with the subtle shading, you still managed to show detail and give it a three dimensional feel. The whispy strands help with that and you did a great job of having it fall believable around her shoulders.Β
The spirits are well done. You've given them almost a 'mass' at the center that flows out in colored detail and their various expressions help give them each a unique look.Β
You did a great job of giving her a hat, which sounds like odd praise but it's a challenging thing to do, often hats look out of place or inconsistent but her hat looks believable and well placed!
I love the un-evenness of the white line around her. It helps her break free from the background while giving her a nice sketchy quality that I find visually appealing.Β
I know i may have been a bit critical of her left hand on the book, but you rendered the right hand well, it adds to her pose and (assuming this is intentional) gives her almost a 'whoops!' expression.Β
The purple shading on the face is a nice way of bringing cohesion to the piece in such a wonderful and subtle way.Β
I really love the hat! xD
OVERALL:
You've done great in a lot of areas, you have a general style that I see reflected in this piece and others. I'm happy you tried a new technique, it's certainly not an easy one and I think it'll only help you grow as an artist! Keep venturing outside your comfort zone and I think you'll find when you return (we all go back to our comfort zones xD) you'll have new tricks that help you expand your skills and get even better! I really love your subtle shading style! Β

Wow, thank you for the critique! Hmm I a can admit I've been too comfortable with drawing the same eyes but I'll try practicing expressions and faces as you've said! As for the details, I believe I overlooked that, something I do a lot unfortunately but next time I'll try to be more keen and pay attention to every details!
Once again, thank you so much for the critique! I love how organized and detailed it was and I am so glad you loved the hat. xD

Haha I'm glad I was able to pull it off. I almost didn't go with it because the sketch was pretty messed up.
