Description

With the recent upload by ThePython'sLair, the old Poser model 9mbi Anaconda has once again been made available to snake/jungle artists.  There's a certain nostalgic feel with this model as it has been used in various artist's work, especially the detailed scenes from Rh70.  That said, I was curious how it compared to the current standby snake model for Daz Studio: Sickleyield's Constrictor.  Having done a couple renders and tinkering, I decided to share my observation on the usage of both models.

Sickleyield's Constrictor model

Pros:

-easily accessible from the Daz store and other sites

-contains four different textures and is easy to edit the textures in an image editor

-has several bones (96 tail bones and 94 neck bones) to make tighter coiling easier and smooth than most other models

-is built-in with several morphs to give different dimensions to the size/species of snake

Cons:

-having more bones can sometimes make posing difficult/tiresome for artists who are used to models with less bones

-the textures are not too detailed...indeed I have seen more detailed images using the older Morphing Python than the Constrictor.

-changing head/body morphs can change the size of neck/tail bones which can make it harder to pose in different morphs

-pose presets work only for the default morph; using poses on a different snake morph will cause a pose distortion that has to be manually fixed

9mbi Anaconda model

Pros:

-detailed texture makes it reliable for a vast array of image projects

-jaw bending gives the model a wider jaw that helps for eating/vore scenes

-has a good medium of bones that give more coiling options then other snake models while not being as difficult/timeconsuming as the Constrictor

Cons:

-hard to access on the web before this recent upload

-has a lack of resources

-no morphs available so only the anaconda morph can be used

-personally had issues moving the model certain transitions when trying out some posing

-lack of tongue/ you have to add a snake tongue

Neither model is superior to the other one; it all depends what type of work you want to do.  If you want a model for high detailed scenes, the 9mbi Anaconda model is the one to use as it has shown over the years to give the best genuine snake look in Daz Studios.  If you are a skilled artist who has no problem creating your own textures, then you can create a wide range of detailed textures for the model that age better than the Constrictor model.  If you are also a coil artist that works more on the technique of posing numerous snakes to create coil rings, then the 9mbi Anaconda is a fine substitute for that skill.

For an artist like myself, I have to stick to the Constrictor model.  The coiling poses I use in my art usually involves just one snake model, and the lack of bones in the 9mbi Anaconda model makes this type of coiling difficult to accomplish.  I am not a skilled artist, so creating my own textures on a detailed map is difficult (especially since the model has three separate body maps that need to be edited).  I can easily edit the texture of The Constrictor model since the model wasn't meant to be highly detailed.  I can create a variety of snake characters and emotions thanks to the existing morphs, and using my hypnotic eye textures are easy for the Constrictor.  I also prefer using the model in contrast to Nashi and the other animal models I use.  Some of the models are not highly detailed, so using a model that has similar details makes image series like mine more cohesive.

Feel free to try both models out, but my verdict can be summed up like this:

- for high detailed scenes, use 9mbi Anaconda

-for image series/stories, use Sickleyield's Constrictor.
